Meet Ma. Florencita “Flor” Cansino, the Davao businesswoman behind Hyatt Diagnostics System, Inc. For years, Flor’s clinic helped Filipinos get the medical clearances they needed to work overseas. Then COVID-19 hit—and everything stopped.
Instead of panicking, Flor pivoted. Her other venture, Goldylab Enterprises (which supplies medical stuff), switched gears and started selling COVID‑19 test kits. The new demand kept cash flowing and basically propped up Hyatt Diagnostics during the rough patch.
Flor says that same “keep‑moving” spirit is what she’s always loved about her bank, BDO. Back when Hyatt was just getting off the ground, BDO’s loans gave her the extra capital she couldn’t drum up on her own.
As her companies grew, Flor leveled up her money management, too. She signed up for BDO’s Cash Management Services (CMS) so she could juggle collections, pay suppliers, and send salaries online—anytime, anywhere. Payroll reconciliation that once took a week now takes a couple of hours. “I can be anywhere, whip out my phone, and the bills get paid,” she says.
In healthcare, there’s zero room for error—one wrong number on a medical certificate can snowball. So speed + accuracy? Non‑negotiable. BDO’s digital tools help her hit both marks, letting her focus on what really matters: running a reliable, life‑changing service.
For Flor, the formula is simple: stay flexible, use smart tools, and partner with a bank that’s got your back. That’s how you turn a crisis into a win.
BDO Unibank announced that it’s ending the offer period for its latest Peso-denominated ASEAN Sustainability Bonds earlier than planned. Originally set to run until July 22, 2025, the bank decided to cut it short and wrap things up by July 14, 2025 because of strong interest from both individual and institutional investors.
This latest bond offering comes with a 1.5-year term and an annual interest rate of 5.875%. Everything will be finalized—issued, settled, and listed—on July 29, 2025.
The money raised from these bonds will go toward funding or refinancing projects that support sustainability, in line with BDO’s Sustainable Finance Framework. It will also help fund BDO’s lending activities and give the bank more funding options.
ING Bank’s Manila branch acted as the Sole Arranger and Sustainability Coordinator. ING and BDO handled the selling, while BDO Capital & Investment Corporation was the Financial Advisor.
Bottom line: BDO’s commitment to sustainability is clearly attracting investor interest.

Reliable, clean water is still out of reach for many communities in the Visayas and Mindanao, where climate swings, rapid urban growth, and shifting ecosystems strain traditional water sources. Meeting this challenge demands forward‑thinking partners and long‑term capital—exactly what Cebu‑based Mactan Rock Industries Inc. has found in BDO Unibank Inc.
For nearly 20 years, BDO has extended revolving credit lines, letters of credit, and import financing that let Mactan Rock scale up, modernize its treatment technologies, and reach more households, hospitals, malls, and tourism hubs—from SM Cebu to SM Iloilo.
“We have worked with resorts, barangays and water-scarce districts in urban areas. By deploying customized water systems, we have seen improvements not just in sanitation but in the overall quality of life, said Mactan Rock Chairman and President Lito R. Maderazo.
“Water treatment requires significant upfront investment and it often takes years to recover. BDO’s trust and support help move our business forward. The Bank has been instrumental in financing our projects,” Maderazo added. “Our partnership with Mactan Rock signifies BDO’s commitment to supporting noteworthy initiatives that drive long-term value for communities and businesses. Access to clean water is crucial to build resilient communities and sustainable economic progress,” said Charles M. Rodriguez, BDO Executive Vice President and Head of the Institutional Banking Group.
Sustainability guides every project. Instead of depleting groundwater, Mactan Rock favors wastewater recycling, rain‑water harvesting, and seawater reverse‑osmosis—solutions that protect the environment while remaining cost‑effective.
With demand for dependable water infrastructure rising fastest in Metro Manila, Mactan Rock is gearing up for a Luzon push. Backed by BDO’s continued financing, the company is set to bring safe, reliable water to even more Filipinos—proving that when finance and innovation converge, communities thrive.

It was literally love at first tap for Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach when she tried out the BDO Universal Teller Machine.
“Honestly, BDO continues to surprise me, even after all these years,” she shared. Pia’s been open about choosing BDO as her personal bank ever since she won Miss Universe—the first Filipina to win the crown in over 40 years. And now, she’s showing just how much she still trusts the brand in a recent Facebook post.
"You know what I love? When things just work," she added. "BDO now has the new Universal Teller Machine, a self-service machine that lets you skip the line and do more than just the usual ATM stuff.
So what can you actually do with it? A lot! You can:
- Update your Smart Passbook
- Deposit checks (yep, even if someone else is doing it for you)
- Make cardless transactions using QR or biometrics
- Withdraw or deposit cash
“It’s safe, quick, and perfect for people like me who love options,” Pia says.
She even walks you through how to use it in the video. For check deposits, just tap Cardless Transaction, choose Check Deposit, and follow the steps. You can even send someone to deposit on your behalf. Want to update your Smart Passbook? Just choose Update Passbook, then pop it in the machine. You can still do other transactions like cash withdrawals, deposit and send money."
What makes this even cooler? BDO is the only bank in the country that offers all of these features in one machine.
As Pia puts it: “BDO is always giving me better ways to bank.”
Right now, you’ll find these Universal Teller Machines in over 400 BDO branches around Metro Manila—so next time you’re dropping by, check it out for yourself and join Pia in discovering many ways the banking universe aligns by using the Universal Teller Machine.
To find the nearest BDO branch or Universal Teller Machine, just head to www.bdo.com.ph and click Find a Branch or ATM.

In many Filipino households, a chubby child is often seen as a sign of good parenting. “Ang cute-cute naman ng anak mo!” is a common compliment moms and dads hear when their child is on the heavier side. For generations, being “on the round side” was associated with being healthy, well-fed, and adorable.
But while the intention is often harmless, this long-held cultural belief can be misleading—and even dangerous. Experts now warn that early childhood obesity can lead to serious health complications later in life, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and emotional challenges like low self-esteem.
It’s time to shift the conversation. Obesity is not just about body size—it’s a chronic disease. And for Filipino parents, understanding the truth about weight is the first step toward raising healthier and happier kids.
As one of the frontrunners in addressing obesity as a disease, Novo Nordisk Philippines is leading the charge through its Truth About Weight campaign—empowering Filipinos with facts, empathy, and science-backed solutions.
Myth: “Obesity is just about overeating and laziness.”
Fact: Obesity is a chronic disease influenced by multiple factors—genetics, hormones, environment, even stress. Children may develop obesity even with regular meals and playtime if other underlying factors are present.
“We should strive to shift our perspective on obesity, recognizing it as a complex health issue rather than solely a lifestyle choice. It's a disease that deserves the same understanding and treatment as any other disease,” said Dr. Cyrus Pasamba, Senior Medical Manager of Novo Nordisk Philippines.
Myth: “Kids will outgrow their baby fat.”
Fact: While some children naturally slim down as they grow, others may continue gaining weight due to metabolic or genetic predispositions. Early intervention is key.
Tip for Parents: Watch for signs of weight-related health issues like sleep apnea, low self-esteem, or fatigue. Consult a pediatrician if you're concerned.
Myth: “Shaming or scolding a child will ‘motivate’ them to lose weight.”
Fact: Negative body image and shame can lead to emotional eating, anxiety, and long-term mental health issues. Supportive, loving guidance is far more effective than criticism.
Parenting Tip: Focus on healthy habits, not numbers on the scale. Make it a family goal to eat better and move more—together.
Myth: “There’s no medical treatment for obesity—it’s all diet and exercise.”

Innovation must serve a purpose or risk becoming noise—and that purpose is your customer. This was the key message of GCash VP and head of new businesses Winsley Bangit during the 1st Mansmith Product Masters Summit held at the RCBC Plaza Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium in Makati City.
A pioneering thought leadership event, the 1st Mansmith Product Masters Summit convenes business leaders to tackle the full spectrum of product development from ideation to execution. Designed to offer both strategic insights and actionable frameworks, the summit serves as a platform for cross-industry learning and innovation.
In his session, “Building a Robust Product Roadmap,” Bangit, who leads strategy and partnerships for the super app's emerging growth areas like MadTech, insuretech, wealth management, and sustainability, challenged the race toward speed and merely for speed. During his talk he emphasized intentional innovation—the practice of designing products with real user problems in mind, guided by clarity and continuous validation.
“I’ve always believed that the best products are built when we listen closely to real customer needs—and when we learn from one another across industries,” said Bangit. “Products shouldn’t be built just because they can be, they should be built because someone genuinely needs them.”
Citing the journey of GCash from e-wallet to inclusive digital finance platform, Bangit emphasized that true differentiation lies not in tech alone, but in building ecosystems that uplift everyone in them.
“We started as a payments solution, but we did not stop there. We tried to identify where we can enhance things, enable users, and enable merchants and we evolved into an ecosystem with much more.”
The event gathered a diverse group of product managers, entrepreneurs, designers, and marketers to equip the country’s sharpest builders with the mindset and tools to create products that resonate. Alongside Bangit, the event featured leaders from Nestlé, JS Unitrade, and Ipsos, offering cross-industry insights on innovation, research, and vision-driven product development.
The summit is organized by Mansmith and Fielders Inc., the Philippines’ leading marketing and entrepreneurship training and consulting firm, known for equipping professionals and enterprises with tools for breakthrough thinking.

MANILA, Philippines – Miming and Friends, the beloved animated YouTube miniseries, has released its fourth episode, continuing its journey of educating children and families about environmental sustainability through songs and animated characters.
Miming and Friends is a collaboration between MondelÄ“z International in the Philippines, and husband-and-wife tandem, Ramon del Prado and Meryll Yan – the local animated content creators behind the Miming and Friends YouTube channel. The series is dedicated to promoting sustainable snacking and responsible waste management practices through engaging and educational content. Partnered with the latter is Save Philippine Seas (SPS), a non-profit organization dedicated to conserving coastal and marine resources for collective action and behavior change.
The latest episode tackles the pressing issue of waste mismanagement and its relationship with climate change, bringing the characters together to learn about greenhouse gases and their impact on the world. "Episode 4 touches into the critical topic of climate change," said Miming and Friends co-creator, Meryll Yan. "We believe that by understanding the causes and effects of greenhouse gases, we can empower the next generation to become proactive environmental stewards."
The episode also introduces a new character – one who has a lot to say about greenhouse gas emissions and where they come from. Named Ghregoryo, the character is painted as a villain and has a very compelling song in the episode, which hopefully shines a light on the importance of individual actions.

"This episode dives into how our choices can affect the ocean and our climate in many unexpected ways," explained Anna Oposa, Chief Mermaid and Executive Director of SPS. “We hope to help the youth connect their everyday actions like energy consumption or accumulating too much waste to the larger issue of greenhouse gases and the urgent need for responsible stewardship."
"This newest adventure on greenhouse gases reminds us that building a sustainable future is a shared responsibility, and that everyone has a role to play," shared Caitlin Punzalan, Corporate and Government Affairs Lead at Mondelēz International in the Philippines. "We are proud to engage with communities across the Philippines and inspire collective action towards a healthier planet."
Since the release of Episode 3 in 2024, the channel has experienced consistent growth, climbing to over 42,800 total subscribers. This surge in viewership and engagement reflects the series’ ability to resonate with kiddie and family audiences and its effectiveness in delivering important messages about environmental stewardship.

Mondelēz International has been instrumental in supporting the series, aligning with their commitment to sustainability and waste management. Through the adventures of anthropomorphic cat-fish Miming and her friends, the series aims to inspire young viewers to take action and make a positive impact on the environment.
"At MondelÄ“z International, we believe that #SustainableSnacking starts at home," adds Punzalan. "Miming and Friends provides a creative platform for reaching the right audiences with engaging content that inspires real and sustainable change. Sustainability can sometimes seem complex, especially for children. We want to help break down these concepts to show how our daily actions can have a positive impact.”
Beyond the success of the series, MondelÄ“z International also achieved key sustainability milestones, including the receipt of Plastic Credit Exchange’s (PCX) Plastic Cleanup Partner seal, recognizing the company’s efforts to not only meet but exceed the Extended Producers Responsibility (EPR) law requirement of collecting post-consumer plastic packaging. Through its partnership with waste diverters, the company collects the equivalent weight of the plastic packaging it uses for its snack products and ensures this is diverted through recycling and other means to avoid being marine litter or landfill.

The campaign aims to collect 40,000 books in line with SM’s 40th anniversary milestone. Each SM mall will serve as an official drop-off point, where specially designed donation boxes will be placed in strategic in-malllocations. Starting July 7, 2025, mall communities are invited to drop off pre-loved books in good condition—complete, clean, dry, and free from major damage.
Empower Communities Through Your Book Donations
Accepted books include fiction and non-fiction titles, children’s books and young adult literature, academic and reference books, as well as magazines and comics in good condition.
Beyond donations, the campaign also highlights SM Cares’ long-term vision to make every SM mall a hub for inclusive learning, community engagement, and shared hope—especially for young readers and future leaders.
This initiative supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

McDonald’s Philippines continues its growth and scaling as it opened its 800th store in the country last June 30. This milestone store is located at Davao Global Township, an emerging central business district infused with a park-inspired lifestyle in Davao del Sur.
The store opening comes as McDonald’s Corporation in Chicago, Illinois granted a new 20-year franchise to Dr. George T. Yang, Chairman and Founder, and Kenneth S. Yang, President & CEO of Golden Arches Development Corporation (GADC). Under the new term, George and Kenneth Yang will continue operating and growing the McDonald’s brand in the country, including sub-franchising its restaurants, until 2045. The Yangs have held the master franchise of McDonald’s in the Philippines since 1981, when the golden arches opened its first store in Morayta, Manila.
“The opening of our 800th store is another milestone for McDonald’s in the Philippines, following our new term license agreement with McDonald’s Corporation. It is a reflection of our stewardship of the business—our commitment to growth, and our continued commitment to the customers and communities we serve. With 800 McDonald’s stores and growing, we look forward to creating more feel-good moments and memorable experiences for more Filipinos in more parts of the country,” said Kenneth S. Yang.
Open for 24 hours a day, the new branch is situated at Matina Galleria, Gen. Douglas MacArthur Highway, Talomo, Davao City. It is the 22nd McDonald’s store in Davao City, and the 1st to have a Bike & Dine. The 179-seater restaurant is available for dine-in, take-out, ride-thru, and McDelivery, and has a Party Area perfect for celebrations.

Boosting Local Employment
The opening of McDonald’s Philippines’ 800th store has created new job opportunities for the residents of Davao, providing gainful employment to almost 100 people from the city and its nearby areas. Restaurant crew and managers are hired through a direct recruitment process.
Today, McDonald’s Philippines’ workforce is over 65,000 with about 70% of those as working students. All employees enjoy job security and receive government-mandated wages and benefits. They also undergo world-class training and holistic learning and development to further their professional growth.
McDonald’s 8th Green & Good Flagship Store
As one of the Green & Good flagship stores of the QSR giant, McDonald’s Davao Global Township is equipped with solar power, rainwater harvesting tank, power-saving photo and motion sensors, LED lights and a more efficient air conditioning system.
Part of its commitment and support to sustainable active mobility, the newest store also includes bike-friendly features such as a Bike and Dine which serve as a perfect pitstop for cyclists during their rides.
McDonald’s Philippines’ other Green & Good stores are located at UN Del Pilar (Manila), Shaw Boulevard Wack-Wack (Mandaluyong), Mambugan (Antipolo), Delos Reyes (Tagaytay), Nuvali (Sta. Rosa, Laguna), Sta. Monica Commonwealth (Quezon City), and Ayala Crescendo (Tarlac).

Grand Opening
Demonstrating its commitment to the local community even before opening its doors, McDonald’s distributed 800 McDonald’s Kindness Kitchen meals to beneficiaries of Barangay Matina Aplaya CDC and the Badjao Community.
To celebrate its unveiling, McDonald’s Davao Global Township treated its first 800 customers to a free 1-pc Chicken McDo. McDonald’s Philippines President and CEO Kenneth S. Yang led the unveiling ceremony of the new branch.

In partnership with the Bulacan State University College of Architecture and Fine Arts Faculty and Alumni and “Ang Bagong Likha Art Group”, this much-anticipated showcase promises to bring hundreds of remarkable artworks closer to the public.
Timed perfectly with SM Supermalls’ 40th Super Years, the exhibit underscores SM City Baliwag’s commitment to championing local talent and providing a platform where artistry flourishes. Shoppers and art enthusiasts alike will have a rare opportunity to view and own an inspiring collection of paintings, sculptures, mixed media pieces, photography, and digital art—all crafted by some of Bulacan’s most respected and promising artists.
More than just a gallery, Art for Everyone transforms the mall into a living canvas—an experience where guests can delve into the stories, heritage, and ideas behind each piece. Building on the success of last year’s Art Market, which earned SM Supermalls a Gold Stevie® Award for Innovation in the Use of Events, this year’s exhibit aims to deepen appreciation for Filipino art while strengthening connections between artists and the community.
The exhibit opens on July 19, kicking off a visual journey that blends tradition with modern perspectives, as artists explore themes rooted in local identity and contemporary culture. Visitors can meet the people behind the works, fostering meaningful dialogue between artist and audience—true to SM’s inclusive vision for art appreciation.

Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) and SM Supermalls have officially sealed a strategic partnership through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing held on Monday, July 1, 2025, at the SM Supermalls Headquarters in Pasay City. The agreement marks the beginning of a joint effort to empower Filipino cooperatives by giving them access to high-foot-traffic mall spaces through the SM Weekend Market — a platform dedicated to showcasing local products, homegrown talent, and Filipino entrepreneurship.
L-R: Royston A. Cabunag, Assistant Vice President and Lead for MSME and Job Fairs, Engr. Junias M. Eusebio, Vice President for Mall Operations of SM Supermalls formalized partnership through a MOA signing with CDA Chairperson Usec. Alexander B. Raquepo and CDA Administrator Asec. Santiago S. Lim, that aims to empower Filipino cooperatives through the SM Weekend Market initiative.
The MOA was signed by Undersecretary Alexander B. Raquepo, CDA Chairperson, and Engr. Junias M. Eusebio, Vice President for Mall Operations of SM Supermalls, in the presence of key officials from both institutions. “This is a historic partnership between the private and public sectors,” said Usec. Raquepo during his remarks. “We take great pride in this collaboration with SM Supermalls, which represents a powerful step forward in uplifting our micro, small and medium cooperative entrepreneurs. This model partnership will not only provide access to markets, but help elevate the economic well-being of our communities.”

Local farmers showcase and sell their fresh harvest to shoppers at the SM Weekend Market, a platform by SM Supermalls that connects producers directly to consumers in high-traffic mall locations.
Under the agreement, CDA will endorse eligible cooperatives across the country to participate in the SM Weekend Market. In turn, SM Supermalls will make space available in key mall locations for a minimal fee—intended only to help cover maintenance costs. “The SM Weekend Market was born out of a simple but powerful idea — to give farmers and local producers, especially those in cooperatives, the chance to bring their goods closer to the people, in places they wouldn’t normally have access to,” said Engr. Junias M. Eusebio, Vice President for Mall Operations at SM Supermalls. “With CDA as our partner, we are excited to open more doors and more mall spaces to co-ops across the country. This partnership will allow more communities to thrive, more stories to be told, and more Filipino-made products to be celebrated.”
