The Jollibee Group was recently recognized by the Asia Pacific (APAC) Tambuli Awards 2022 for promoting Inclusive Growth through its Farmer Entrepreneurship Program. The program engages multi-sectoral partners to train and enable small farmers to become entrepreneurs to improve their livelihood.

Now on its 16th edition, the APAC Tambuli Awards annually recognizes campaigns on effective brand purpose across the globe. Organized by the University of Asia and the Pacific’s School of Communication, the awards introduced the corporate purpose categories this year. Under Corporate Purpose, the Inclusive Growth category recognizes a brand “providing the means and opportunities for the marginalized sectors in society to be part of the company’s success in a
sustainable way.”

“Buying directly from farmers allows us to support the local agriculture sector, while promoting sustainable business practices. As we celebrate more milestones, we vow to extend our successes and gains to more communities that would need our help the most,” said Jollibee Group Chief Sustainability and Public Affairs Officer Pepot Miñana.

Jollibee Group sources about 15% to 20% of its vegetable requirements
from Farmer Entrepreneurship Program farmers, giving them a stable market for their produce
and emboldening them to dream of better lives.

Farmer Entrepreneurship Program is the flagship program of Jollibee Group Foundation, the company’s social development arm. Under the program, farmers are taught and mentored on the eight-step agro-enterprise clustering approach, which helps farmers to collectively meet the volume and quality requirements of big buyers and market their produce.

To date, JGF as has trained over 3,000 farmers since 2008 and helped develop 17 farmer groups composed of hundreds of farmers to become accredited suppliers of the Jollibee Group. Since 2009, these farmer groups have delivered about 9,000 tons of vegetables to the company equivalent to more than USD7 million worth of sales revenue for the small farmers.

Through the Farmer Entrepreneurship Program, Jollibee Group Foundation
has trained over 3,000 farmers since 2008 and helped hundreds of farmers to form clusters that
can collectively meet the volume and quality requirements of big buyers, including the Jollibee
Group. The program brings together a comprehensive suite of interventions to sharpen farmers’
technical skills and business acumen and link them with institutional markets.

The Foundation implements the program in coordination with several units within the Jollibee Group and forms partnerships with different like-minded institutions to provide various interventions that help farmer become agro-entrepreneurs who can supply different markets.

The program currently works with 54 partner organizations, including farmer groups, local government units, non-government organizations, financing institutions, academic institutions, agriculture service providers, and the Department of Agriculture. As a result, smallholder farmers earn higher income, which empowers their capacity to provide food for their own families.

“We are grateful for being recognized the first recipient of Tambuli Award’s Inclusive Growth citation. We share this recognition with our dedicated partners nationwide who work relentlessly to empower smallholder farmers, “added Miñana.

Like a city that keeps on growing, SM City Clark in Pampanga never fails to fascinate us with its new and amazing attractions. Starting out as a 101,840 square- meter mall when it opened in 2006, it now sprawls at 308,909 square meters. It has likewise evolved into a complex, which now includes BPO Towers, a Tech Hub, a Park Inn by Radisson Hotel, National University, and SMX Convention Center.

The latest addition is the Sky Line, an elevated Bridgeway which brings a brand new state-of-the-art experience four meters above the ground.

Inspired by New York’s iconic High Line, it is similarly designed as a “living system” that highlights landscape architecture, urban design, and ecology; as well as art, fitness, and fun for family and friends.

Located along the north edge of the SM City Clark mall, the Sky Line connects and integrates the widest possible variety of buildings with lush landscapes and attractions. But, beyond acting as a connector, the SM Clark Sky Line is envisioned to be a destination by itself – an ideal location to relax, get some exercise, take a selfie, and enjoy nature.

The Sky Line’s lush landscape includes hundred-year-old acacia trees that were preserved and incorporated into the design. It also showcases a diverse range of plant species - Picarra, Dwarf Pandakaki, Palmera, Spiderlily, White Kamuning, and Yellow Iris.

The park’s myriad of features and activities in multiple zones – retail, restaurants, art, fitness – feature separate offerings, each with his own character and landscape, as well as programmed activities carefully planned to delight, interest, educate, and entertain.

Attractions include a Paw Park for our furry friends, a Fitness Area with an outdoor gym, a Tree Park where one can dine amidst tree houses, art installations and more.

Here are some fun facts on why the SM City Clark Sky Line is a great place to
Meet, Eat, and Play:

·        The Sky Line Bridgeway is 9,018 square meters

·        At 4 -meters high above the ground, it has that top of the world feeling

·        The Bridgeway’s 800- meter loop is equivalent to 1050 steps

·        1,050 steps can burn 30-40 calories

·        The jogging/walking trail includes start and finish markings and begins and ends just across the outdoor gym

·        Walking around the Sky Line’s 800- meter loop takes about 10 minutes for a speed of 3mph.

·        There are colorful selfie stops along the Sky Line like a pool filled with balloons and animal-shaped floaters

·        The Sky Line bridge may be reached through the second level mall expansion area, the second level podium parking, the second level SMX entrance, and the ground floor stairs

·        The area is handicap friendly with 23 parking spaces reserved for people with disabilities out of the 802 available. There are also PWD ramps, two PWD comfort rooms, and three elevators to help them get around.

·        The Sky Line is also eco-friendly with a waste segregation system and a NO SMOKING policy as part of the Park rules. Facemasks are still mandatory in keeping with government policies.

The current rate at which individuals observe sustainability practices is far from halting climate change. Whether it is reducing the use of disposable items or saving more energy, environmentally conscious activities will only yield significant results if everyone is “cast in the same mold,” so to speak. That said, high-impact global sustainable development lies within the responsibility of the government and large organizations—conglomerates among them.

Understanding such a role, SM Prime Holdings, Inc., one of the largest integrated property developers in Southeast Asia, has incorporated its sustainable practices in its developments early on. Through SM Prime’s Costa Del Hamilo Inc., a leader in the leisure resort industry and the movers behind Hamilo Coast – this premium seaside complex in Nasugbu, Batangas, fosters a tangible connection with nature. Marking its quindecennial year, Hamilo Coast looks back at its milestones and achievements with its core emphasis on sustainable development.

“Sustainability has been at the forefront of our vision in providing a resort lifestyle. We strive to practice both environmental and social sustainability in our operations through our partners and commnunities,” Franklin M. Bolalin, Assistant Vice President for Hamilo Estate Management, said.

Disaster risk reduction

Every year, the country deals with an average of 19 typhoons, with some often resulting in damages to properties and loss of life. Coastal defenses such as seawalls and breakwater structures are often implemented to resist storm surges. In the case of Hamilo Coast, mangrove trees are the key.

Hamilo Coast’s 100,000 square-meter or equivalent to 10 hectares mangrove belt is one of the largest mangrove areas in the municipality. The sustainable beach resort town has since planted 50,000 mangrove propagules, protected hand-in-hand with the conservation organization World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines.

Biodiversity conservation

Apart from disaster mitigation, mangrove trees also benefit the climate by absorbing greenhouse gases (GHGs) and carbon dioxide. This capacity nurtures the ecosystem and biodiversity in the area, providing habitat for a wide array of species.

Hamilo is home to rich marine life and abundant flora and fauna. Its conservation programs and various sustainability initiatives have nurtured and conserved its precious biodiversity. There are about 96 various bird species found at the estate. Among these bird species are the rough-crested Malkoha and the Philippine eagle-owl.

From growing local plants to conducting regular coastal clean-up drives, coastal resource conservation initiatives are active in Hamilo Coast. With the help of WWF, they can increase their fisheries’ biological capacity and monitor their Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)—the Pico de Loro, Etayo and Santelmo coves which are among the three MPAs for Costa Del Hamilo’s Sustainable Development Project. Hamilo has been working with WWF since 2007 monitoring the health and viability of Hamilo Coast area.

In recognition of its conservation efforts, Hamilo Coast was cited by the World Wide Fund for Nature as its longest Sustainability Partner in 2020.

“Over the years, our partnership with SM significantly contributed to the impact we are making in our work in Hamilo Coast. From liquid waste and coral monitoring, to our present work on integrated waste management and food sheds, we hope that this continuing partnership would help us realize our vision of making Hamilo a holistic model of sustainability”, says Katherine Custodio, WWF-Philippines’ Executive Director.

Green buildings development

The path towards a sustainable future is paved with many interventions, including zero waste, dematerialization, zero emissions and resource efficiency practices. For its part, Hamilo Coast makes its intention to be a premiere sustainability community possible by making sure its buildings are designed with the environment in mind.

Some of the estate’s facilities are powered by alternative sources of energy. For example, its lamp posts use solar power more than traditional ones to function. Natural lighting and ventilation are also noticeable in some of its residential areas, which benefits the environment as well as its tenants. Additionally, Hamilo Coast implements a solid waste management plan that consists of recovery of materials and vermicomposting, among others.

Sustainable living

At Hamilo Coast’s core is how a distinct beachfront home can harmonize with its surrounding environment. As people crave for a more relaxed environment, closer to nature and the outdoors amid a work-from-home setup pushed by the ongoing pandemic, Hamilo homes give access to invigorating landscapes, coves to explore and the calming sea.

Fifteen years later, Hamilo Coast has surpassed its reputation as a weekend respite. It is now one of the best settlement options for people looking to live the coastal life in a sustainable community.

Farmers Market Day at SM Sta. Rosa

Limited market information and market access are two major obstacles to increased smallholder farmers’ income. According to studies, farmers in grassroot communities often lack access to profitable, value-added markets. In the absence of critical supporting functions, such as infrastructure and service provision – farmers struggle to transform their traditional subsistence farms into a feasible commercially oriented production. Buyers, on the other hand, such as wholesalers, find it difficult to get the quantity and quality of produce that they need for processing on a timely basis.

Because of this challenge, SM Foundation collaborated with various government agencies, and engaged various SM business units such as the SM Development Corp. (SMDC), SM Supermalls and SM Markets to ensure that local farmers under the Kabalikat Sa Kabuhayan (KSK) program have venues where they can sell their produce amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

SMDC Weekend Market

From training KSK participants in practicing sustainable farming technologies via technology transfer and product development, SMFI, together with various SM business units used the power of collaboration to create farm-market linkage – which intends to create a powerful driver of rural poverty reduction.

Team social good

The Good Guys Market is a weekend market set up in SMDC properties to connect small-scale farmers directly with consumers—condo residents. This initiative links around 26,000 small-scale farmers directly with consumers.

Together with SM Supermalls, SMFI launched the Green Lane initiative. Led by the wives of the KSK farmers, the social enterprise offers a wide variety of quality yet affordable indoor and landscape plants which cater to every enthusiast’s preference. In addition, the team also launched the KSK Farmers’ Market Day to provide farmers with market exposure in select SM Malls nationwide.

KSK Pop-Up Booth

Meanwhile, SMFI also partnered with SM Markets in creating market for onion farmers. Through the partnership, SMFI was able to establish specialized onion pop-up booths creating a stable market for small-scale onion farmers.

Millions of smallholder farmers are seeking ways to improve the productivity of their farms and to improve their market performance. Modern farming technologies, paired with market linkage, such as the SM KSK, plays a vital role in improving the livelihood of small-scale farmers and their families.

SM Foundation’s Kabalikat Sa Kabuhayan (KSK) is SMFI’s Social Good program on sustainable agriculture that intends to uplift the lives of Filipinos in grassroot communities through sustainable agriculture via technology transfer, product development and farm-market linkage. To date, the program has trained more than 28,500 farmers from more than 900 cities/municipalities nationwide.

OFWs are economic heroes of the country for their significant contribution to the growth of the Philippine economy. One of the main sources of our high percentage of inflow of dollars into our country is the remittances that come from our countrymen who work hard abroad to support their respective families. In fact, the Philippines is one of the top five economies in the world benefitting the most from remittances.

The question, “Is the support of our country’s leaders enough to reciprocate their heroism? They have been called the new heroes of the country, but are they given recognition and appreciation for this heroism? "

These distressed OFWs are the people who persevered, worked hard, and spent their time to succeed in establishing the Department of Migrant Workers, " this is also with the great help of our good presidential adviser Atty. Abdullah Mama-O, who is now appointed by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte as the first secretary of the Department of Migrant Workers on March 15, 2022.

Unified Migrant Workers Global (UMWG) and OFWs Distressed Advocate Philippines (ODAP), who are both OFW groups, held a press conference on June 15, 2022 at the White Knight Hotel Saint Anne Manila to call for a 15-minute dialogue with incoming Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

This is in connection with the news of the appointment of Susan "Toots" Ople by incoming Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr as the secretary of Department of Migrant workers. The said OFW groups believe the recently appointed first secretary of the Department of Migrant Workers Atty. Abdullah Mama-O should retain his position since aside from being a Muslim and an OFW himself, has just been appointed last March 9, 2022.

In addition, outgoing Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte formed a task force in 2018, of which Mama-o was made a member of, as part of a bid to free Filipinos who were kidnapped by armed militants in Libya. In 2019, Mama-o helped facilitate the return of seven Filipinos in Libya who were accused of smuggling fuel.

Solar rooftop at SM City North EDSA

Climate change is one of the most pressing and defining global issues today. It has become imperative for both the public and private sectors to continue to band together to primarily, safeguard the welfare of the people and to step up to strengthen the resilience of the nation.

The Philippines currently ranks third globally when it comes to climate change vulnerability. In relation to its geographical location, it is more exposed to altering intensities of climate change manifested through erratic weather systems and natural calamities.

The private sector is called upon now more than ever to align with the principles of sustainable development and to take on the same firm stance on environmentally sound practices in its operations.

Mr. Hans T. Sy

“I constantly encourage the private sector to work closely with the government. This way, we can be more cohesive in our efforts to make more meaningful progress towards a better and sustainable future. As a private enterprise, SM Prime will continue to do its share in addressing climate change for the benefit of communities,” said Hans T. Sy, SM Prime Holdings Chairman of the Executive Committee.

Water conservation

Sustainability at SM Prime is at the core of its corporate identity. SM Prime has spearheaded sustainable practices as well as set records in pioneering programs to consciously protect the environment and strongly focus on resilience in its developments.

For one, the property conglomerate embarked on a campaign to substantially reduce its water consumption. It pioneered the installation of sewage treatment plants even before the measure was required by way of the Clean Water Act in 2004.

Today, its sewage treatment plants recycle 8.7 million cubic meters of water, lessening its dependence on fresh water sources for air conditioning operations, gardening, water closet flushing and other non-potable uses. SM Prime’s water catchment basins across 20 SM malls can also catch and store almost 79 million liters of water in total every time it rains, or as much as 32 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

By controlling the flow of flood water, surrounding communities have been provided more protection against the devastating effects of floods, alleviating what communities would normally fear when the rains come.

Renewable energy

SM Prime continues to explore ways to promote environmental consciousness in its operations and developments to minimize environmental impact.

In 2014, SM Prime achieved an important milestone in the country with SM City North EDSA becoming then the world’s largest solar-powered mall. Today, SM Prime is adding eleven more malls with solar roof decks.

Showing its firm resolve to advance its sustainability agenda, the company is committed to increase the use of renewable energy by 50% in 2022 across its various business segments, ahead of the national goals to be 35% renewable by 2030.

Through these efforts, SM Prime is committed to provide affordable and clean energy to its tenant-partners, minimizing the carbon footprint emission in its operations.

Collaboration toward resilience

As a key figure in the private sector, Mr. Sy and his dedication to environmental protection continues to serve as a testament to how Philippine businesses can usher positive change toward disaster resilience and risk reduction management in the country.

In 2012, Mr. Sy joined the United Nations Private Sector Advisory Group (PSAG) for Disaster Reduction. In 2015, he was also inducted as the first and only Filipino member UNDRR ARISE (Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies) International Board. He currently serves as co-chair in the ARISE-Philippines network and National Resilience Council (NRC) of the Philippines, representing the private sector. He continues to help develop multi-sectoral partnerships in the country to strengthen the ability of corporations, including MSMEs, to prepare and respond to disasters brought about by natural hazards such as earthquake.

“Climate change is looming over our Mother Earth. If we can contribute no matter how little and if I can get everybody to be aware of it, I think we will make an impact. It’s never too late,” said Mr. Sy in a video interview for the 50 Sustainability & Climate Leaders initiative.

The Build, Build, Build program has ensured that Mindanao is now geared up for globalization. Today, not only Davao and Cagayan de Oro are enjoying an upward trend amid the pandemic. Even surrounding areas, such as Ozamiz City in Misamis Occidental, are seeing an increase in commercial and real estate growth.

Proof of this is the successful mass turnover to over 50 new homeowners of Lumina Ozamiz, one of the house and lot developments of Lumina Homes, a proud subsidiary of Vista Land and Lifescapes Inc.

The 10.2-hectare housing project is located in Brgy. Labo in Ozamiz, and is strategically accessible to major establishments, business centers, marketplace, hospitals, schools, and more.

Established with Filipino investors and OFWs in mind, Lumina Ozamiz offers a smart way to create passive wealth through affordable housing, whose worth will soon match mid-income pricing.

“We warmly welcome you to your new home and community. We in Lumina Homes are delighted to watch your investment grow. In just a few years since you availed of a house and lot, you can now see how the worth of your property has increased beyond what you paid for,” said Rey Montoya, Lumina Mindanao Cluster Head, during the event.

Together with Lumina executives, the homebuyers attended a move-in briefing and unit inspection before the much-awaited acceptance of property and release of house keys and documents.

The event also had Zumba and a tree-planting activity for sellers and new homeowners, symbolizing Lumina Homes’ focus towards a healthier and greener lifestyle, amid urban growth.

In all its projects in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, Lumina is transforming open spaces into landscaped gardens, some with edible vegetable plots, so residents can expect more stretches of greenery along walking and jogging paths.

“Lumina Homes is committed to going beyond what is expected of an affordable housing community. We will maximize our developments' potential in providing residents the quality home and life they deserve,” adds Engr. Joemi Tan, Lumina Homes Division Head, Lumina North Luzon and Mindanao.

As a support to the local farmers, SM Foundation in cooperation with the City Agriculture Office launched the Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan Farmer’s Market Day program at SM City San Jose del Monte June 10, Friday.

The Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan on Sustainable Agriculture program of SM Foundation aims to bring sustainable farming technologies and training to both urban and rural communities to help farmers bring food to their table while creating economic opportunities for them.

For 12 weeks, farmers are taught on effective backyard planting and small scale farming technologies to improve the quality and quantity of their crops.

Nancy N. Aguilar, 59, a proud graduate of Kabalikat Sa Kabuhayan in 2015, expressed her gratitude to SM Foundation and all its partners in the project. “I hope this program can further help all types of farmers,” she said. “I now advocate healthy and sustainable crop and livestock production, at least within the community,” she added.

From providing farmer’s training, SM Foundation continues to enhance the skills and knowledge of its farmer graduates by providing market exposure through pop-up booths located at the lower ground floor in SM City San Jose del Monte.

This activity is one way of linking the graduates to prospective markets and pave way for them to become entrepreneurs as they are given the institutional selling experience amid different economic challenges, unfavorable weather conditions, and limited planting space and resources.

The Kabalikat Sa Kabuhayan Farmer’s Market offers different affordable fresh vegetables and fruits to consumers and is open every Friday until December 2022.

SM City Baliwag and SM Center Pulilan will also launch the activity to cater the KSK farmer graduates in the communities they serve.
