Caregivers have been called the unsung heroes of the pandemic, and with good reason. Caregiving is one of the toughest jobs around, made even more difficult by the additional health risks COVID-19 poses.

As a caregiver, her job is never easy, but Jovie Garcia from General Santos City remains grateful for being able to keep it. She is also thankful that her husband can continue working as a tricycle driver, so they can both support their 14-year-old daughter and her ailing mother-in-law. “Buti nga po may trabaho kami nitong pandemic. Hindi naman po nai-stop,” she said.

Jovie was on duty when she won the opportunity to play 3.3 Shopee Milyonaryo, an interactive lucky draw contest on Shopee Live, last February 22. Her ward, 92-year-old Lola Maria, was right beside her, encouraging her during the game.

Despite comments from other users telling her to pick boxes labeled with other letters, Jovie chose S, believing it to be a lucky letter since her daughter’s name starts with it. “Feeling po namin and’un talaga yung isang milyon,” she said.

Sure enough, the box was opened to reveal the ₱1M jackpot prize. Jovie, who was overwhelmed to the point of tears upon winning, was only able to announce the big news to her family over the phone as she was on 24-hour duty. She looks forward to sharing the joy and excitement with her loved ones in person.

She also plans to use the prize money to buy medicines for her mother-in-law and fund a small business. “Hindi po talaga ako makapaniwala. Salamat po sa Panginoon. Maraming maraming salamat po sa Shopee family sa napalanunan kong ₱1M.”

Want to be the next Shopee Milyonaryo?

Ben&Ben are set to make the impossible possible by headlining The Inevitable Drone Show—the first of its kind to feature a music performance with drone lights show illuminating the Manila skyline in synchronized fashion.

Presented by SMART 5G, the eco-friendly and innovative show will surely grab headlines as Rizal Park and its nearby areas will get to experience the modern lights show LIVE on February 28 (Sunday) at exactly 7pm. It will also simultaneously air on Ben&Ben’s official Facebook page.

To accompany the picturesque storytelling in the sky, the award-winning Filipino collective will be performing an extended version of “Inevitable”—the acclaimed song that was used as a soundtrack and a music score for SMART 5G’s romantic sci-fi TVC featuring Korean drama superstars, Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin.

For their part, Ben&Ben immediately said yes to participating in this initiative that explores the creative possibilities of aerial entertainment, easily becoming the first Filipino band to mount a drone show.

The first and probably the most immediate reason why we accepted this project is because it merges different forms of art with technology to create a one-of-a-kind experience for our audience,” vocalist and guitarist Paolo Benjamin shares in a statement. “Some of us have experienced drone shows before, but only set to pre-existing songs and records. The opportunity to actually score and record the music and live performance to one such show was something we could just not pass up on.”

Ben&Ben’s percussionist Andrew De Pano takes pride in the fact that the nine-piece outfit are also involved with the visual aspects of the drone show, and not just the music itself. “The mere fact that it’s a drone show is definitely a first big difference,” Andrew says. “We also had to base our music performance solely on a storyboard, which was a new experience compared to the usual scoring of a commercial with more or less final video footage to reference off of. We hope that with the work we put into it, the audience experiences the story of our song Inevitable, set to a unique visual experience that even we are especially excited for.”

The Inevitable Drone Show is a collaboration between SMART 5G and Ben&Ben.

Inevitable,’ the song that Ben&Ben will be performing, is out now on all digital platforms worldwide via Sony Music.

Reigning ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera is among a handful of martial arts superstars to guest on upcoming reality television show, “The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition.”

The 43-year-old Filipino-American mixed martial arts veteran joined legendary fighters Georges St-Pierre, Renzo Gracie, and former ONE Welterweight World Champion Ben Askren, as well as high-profile CEOs from some of the world’s largest companies.

Vera, who is currently in Florida training alongside fellow athletes Aung La N Sang and Martin Nguyen at Sanford MMA, recalled his experience on ONE Championship’s version of the iconic TV franchise.

“It was very educational and refreshing not to have any pressure on me in front of the camera. I got to learn a lot from the candidates. I look forward to seeing ‘The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition,’” said Vera.

“It was an honor, an absolute privilege to be standing next to greatness both in the martial arts and business worlds.”

The show, based on the popular non-scripted television franchise, is a complete departure from the classic American version, and offers viewers an entirely new experience.

“The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition” invites 16 candidates hand-picked from around the world to participate in a series of business and physical challenges, as they compete for a US $250,000 job offer to work directly for ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong as his protege.

Vera, who was front and center to witness the candidates scrap and battle to reach the finale and ultimately win the competition, says viewers will be in awe of just how tough this version of “The Apprentice” truly was.

“I think the physical challenges for the candidates were something very unexpected. They were definitely not prepared even though they thought they were. It was very cool seeing some of them push beyond their limits, while some just fell apart,” said Vera.

Apart from being one of the most dominant world champions in ONE Championship, Vera is also an entrepreneur himself, owning several businesses including the Asian branch of renowned gym Alliance MMA. He, in particular, learned a lot from his time on “The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition.”

Vera described his experience working with guest CEOs such as Zoom’s Eric Yuan, Grab’s Anthony Tan, and Catcha Group’s Patrick Grove, among others.

“It was a combination of being nervous, because I didn’t want to miss anything, and being nervous to discover some of my thought processes to be incorrect. It was definitely a learning curve all the time, and I’m very blessed to have this opportunity over and over with ONE Championship,” said Vera.

“The Apprentice” is one of the biggest non-scripted reality television programs in history, judging the business skills of candidates who are competing for a job offer under a high-profile CEO. It has aired in more than 120 countries.

The first season of “The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition” consists of 13 episodes. It’s scheduled to premiere across Asia on Thursday, 18 March, on AXN, the show’s official Asian broadcast partner, followed by a global launch in June across broadcast and streaming platforms.

Having been witness to the candidates’ struggles, Vera learned exactly what it takes to be a contestant on the show, and has some advice for those wanting to join the show if it’s ordered for future seasons.

“[You need to be] someone who won’t break. Someone who knows how to take lead and set the example by doing. Someone who lives up to all of the values that ONE Championship stands for. That is what it will take to win ‘The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition,’” said Vera.

Vera is slated to make his return to the ONE Circle later this year to defend his ONE Heavyweight World Title, with a potential opponent being UFC veteran Arjan “Singh” Bhullar, although details of the bout have yet to be finalized or announced.

While it was important for Smart to grant wishes of its subscribers when it comes to bringing consumers closer to their foreign idols, the latest Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin TVC presented an opportunity to put a Filipino band behind the soundtrack and musical scoring.

Here’s where Ben&Ben comes in, providing “Inevitable,” the song that is heard in the background while Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin pursue each other in this romantic-sci-fi TVC.

With lyrics inspired by real-life events, Ben&Ben members simply happen to be CLOY fans as well. In a collaboration set to motion by the band, Smart, and Sony Music, things started falling into place when it came to lending soundtrack and musical score for this collaborative campaign.

In an official statement released by Sony Music, lead singer Paolo Benjamin said, “Inevitable is a song that tries to describe the nature of fate, and how all our actions somehow lead us to some better place that is destined for us. It’s also a song about being real with someone, and that no matter how scary that may seem at times, there is freedom in baring your truest nature with someone dear to you, even if that someone is yourself.”

Miguel Benjamin added, “The songwriting in itself presents a concept of the state that is both a surreal mystery and a peaceful certainty, so we wanted to create an aural representation of what these lyrics felt like. Our process started with a mix of acoustic guitars, which I tweaked with sitar effects as the main intro riff; kind of like a representation of the two contrasting feelings working together.”

About the Smart 5G Campaign

The TVC, which serves as a joint project top-billed by Korean drama stars Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin, is part of the new Smart 5G campaign to make what seemed impossible, possible.

From “The Captain Has Landed” to landing into each other’s arms, Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin took chemistry to a whole new level in the Smart 5G TVC as they chase each other on the road and through different dimensions only to meet again just as Bin asks, “Do you believe it’s possible?” To which Ye Jin replies, “I do!”

Smart has put together Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin together in one project for the first time much like the latest development with Smart 5G, which has started enabling subscribers to do groundbreaking things we thought we couldn’t do.

The TVC was even made more powerful thanks to Ben&Ben’s “Inevitable” complementing the top-tier material.

In partnership with the Philippine Blood Center, SM Foundation Inc. (SMFI) recently conducted a bloodletting activity at SM City San Jose del Monte. Employees from SM, its affiliates, tenants, and shoppers participated the blood donation in the hope to save lives through this little act of heroism.

Ms. Romalyn Ordoñez, an SM employee and a regular participant of the program said that her family once experienced the need of a blood donor. “I saw its importance, and I know I have something to give, so why not donate if I am fully aware that I am qualified?” she explains. “Besides, I want to encourage others to do the same, I believe there are a lot of people who can donate, maybe they’re just not aware of its significance, yet” she said.

Another is Mr. Joseph Guela, a customer and a first time blood donor recognized the importance of bloodletting when his grandmother once needed it but wasn’t able to donate. “Now that I am able to donate, I am encouraging everyone to be healthy and support this simple yet vital way of saving lives” he shares. “There’s a lot of patient who needs blood, but helping at least one is already a symbolic act of giving” he added.

To secure the health of everyone knowing the existence of coronavirus, safety protocols were strictly observed. Aside from wearing of face masks and shields, beds are likewise socially distanced and disinfected every after donors.

The bloodletting is a usual activity executed in SM mall branches and SMDC Residences in close collaboration with the Department of Health-Philippines Blood Center and Philippine Red Cross.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been the most challenging and life-changing event for today’s generation. Some have lost their jobs, while others have lost their lives. Needless to say, this health crisis has underscored the need for people’s safety and protection from the unexpected.

To answer today’s growing need for better safeguards, Allianz PNB Life, one of the major life insurers in the Philippines championing sustainability, has launched Allianz Shield, a regular pay, unit-linked insurance plan that protects policyholders against unexpected situations, such as the diagnosis of a critical illness or accidental death and dismemberment.

It covers at least 10 times the annual premiums depending on the insured’s age upon application, for as low as PHP 15,000 annually.

“The previous year showed that many Filipinos are vulnerable to health and financial crises. Not everyone has a backup plan in times of need. And unfortunately, many have been challenged economically because of the domino effect of COVID-19,” said Allianz PNB Life Chief Marketing Officer Gino Riola. “With Allianz Shield, we want to make sure the unexpected expenses are taken care of as well.”

According to Rio, Allianz Shield can help people build a well-rounded protection plan that gives them PHP 1 million coverage upon death, PHP 1 million coverage upon diagnosis of a critical illness and another PHP 1 million coverage for accidental death and dismemberment*.

“This plan comes with an additional rider coverage that waives succeeding premiums until age 65 of the insured upon diagnosis of a critical illness or upon contracting total and permanent disability. It gives our clients the option to withdraw their investment funds, which are free of charge for up to four times in one year,” he said.

Allianz Shield also comes with a Loyalty Bonus, giving funds a boost every five years, as long as the policy remains in force and your premiums are paid regularly.

Additionally, Allianz Shield also offers a complimentary Life Event Benefit Rider, which credits back to the policyholder a part of the insurance charges you have paid, in the event of marriage, birth of a child, demise of a family member, involuntary loss of employment, divorce, or separation.

Interested applicants can contact a Life Changer, message the Allianz PNB Life Facebook page (facebook.com/allianzpnblifeofficial), or visit the Allianz PNB Website at www.allianzpnblife.ph.

*This example is for a female aged 30 years old with quarterly premiums of PHP 6,000, payable in 10 years.

As the world grapples with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals and companies have been compelled to rethink the ways they live and operate. No other sector has been pushed to the brink more than healthcare, with everyone from health systems and hospitals to medical front-liners and their patients, constantly innovating and adapting to rise to the challenge.

Havas Life Manila aims to be a partner of the health sector as it continues to battle the pandemic and the imminent effects of its aftermath. Together with healthcare experts from the Nicholas Hall Group of Companies and experiential marketing firm MME Connections, Havas Life Manila launches The New Life, a campaign that aims to provide insights on post-pandemic healthcare through a series of dialogues with medical and scientific experts.

This free three-part webinar series will feature a powerhouse lineup of resource speakers that includes industry leaders and professionals who will discuss the most pressing topics on health and wellness brought about by the COVID-19 crisis.

We also hope that this 2021, Filipinos will prioritize their health more and cultivate a better understanding of public health matters. While the world was quite unprepared in dealing with this global pandemic, we can move forward by utilizing technologies and mainstreaming public health discussions through initiatives such as The New Life.”

“The Nicholas Hall Group of Companies is excited to be part of this conversation in the Philippines,” expressed Executive Chairman & Creative Solutions Director Nicholas Hall.

“We are more than happy to tap into our global network of specialists, as well as our extensive resource of data and research, to help Filipinos navigate the current crisis. With more developments about vaccines and new information about the virus itself coming out constantly, we need to have more regular discussions so that the industry, and therefore also the general public, can be informed and guided accordingly.”

The online conference series is set on the following dates with their respective topics: March 25, “New Ways to Care: The Future of Healthy Doctor-Patient Relationships”; June 24, “VacciNation: Vaccines for a Healthier Nation”; September 30, “Health Futurecast: A Glimpse of the Future of Healthcare and Wellness.” The first 50 registrants will also get to be part of a virtual chat with Nicholas Hall himself.

SM’s new sustainability initiative encourages mall shoppers, communities, and individuals to bring their old gadgets and other e-waste for proper disposal by accredited hazardous waste collection partners. The e- waste collection drop boxes at SM City Marilao and SM Center Pulilan are located at the IT Zone while SM City Baliwag and SM City San Jose Del Monte’s designated e-waste collection boxes are placed in Cyberzone.

With the exponential growth in use of electrical and electronic equipment, generation of e-waste and its management has emerged as a formidable challenge. Global E-Waste Monitor in 2020 reported that the world generated about 53.6 million metric tons (Mt) of e-waste in 2019; a 21-percent jump from 44.4 Mt in 2014. And by 2030, the global total is projected to swell and increase to 74.7 Mt.

E-waste if not correctly disposed can release dangerous chemicals like lead, mercury, and lithium, which are not only toxic to the environment but also to humans. Exposure to these chemicals can also lead to life-threatening complications such as poisoning, immune system disorders, and even cancer.

With this in mind, SM Malls in Bulacan are set to help the locals dispose their e-waste responsibly through the SM Electronic Waste Collection Program. By putting up designated e-waste collection drop boxes, SM Malls in Marilao, Baliwag, Pulilan, and San Jose Del Monte hope to raise public awareness on the need to practice and responsibly manage e-waste.

Through the SM Cares Program on Environment and in support of SM Cyberzone; mall shoppers, communities, and individuals are encourage to bring their old gadgets and other e-waste for proper disposal by accredited hazardous waste collection partners.

Acceptable electronic waste includes old or broken mobile phones, mobile phone chargers, power cords, commercial batteries, earphones/ earbuds, calculators, printer ink and toner cartridges, small gadgets, and computer wiring, among others.

Apart from the SM E-Waste Collection Program, SM’s other initiatives for the Environment in Bulacan include the Trash to Cash recycling market and annual green film festival. SM City Marilao Hypermarket is also taking the green route earnestly as it encourages shoppers to use eco or recyclable bags to minimize and soon replace the use of plastic bags.

Here’s the newest meat alternative that looks, tastes and is priced like real meat.

It’s a generally accepted notion that eating healthy means skipping great-tasting food. Not anymore. Now it’s completely possible to enjoy the best of both worlds as Century Pacific Food Inc. (CNPF), one of the largest branded food companies in the Philippines, unveils its newest brand: unMEAT, a 100% plant-based meat, made tasty from simple ingredients.

“One of the biggest concerns about plant-based foods is that they are not delicious or as pleasing to the palate as real meat,” notes Nikki Dizon, a Senior Executive at CNPF.

“But our Nutrition Science team took that as a challenge, and completely delivered by coming up with a meat alternative that unbelievably and undeniably looks, feels, and tastes like meat. Moreover, they made unMEAT using simple ingredients and extracted the nutrients from real food rather than synthetic compounds so it’s healthier and more affordable”

The launch of unMEAT was driven by a growing consumer demand to incorporate healthier food options into their diet, especially given the ongoing pandemic. This is evident in the shift of food trends on social media. Whereas in the past, food aficionados across the globe constantly debated on the best burgers, social media is now filled with discussions on which plant-based burger looks, tastes, smells, and even bleeds like real meat.

With unMEAT, taste is never compromised! It is as delicious as a regular meat patty, with a similar mouth-feel, making it the best meat alternative for those who are planning to make the switch to a healthier, more sustainable diet. Even better, unMEAT is packed with simple but nutritious ingredients. It is a good source of fiber and protein. It’s also cholesterol-free, trans fat-free, egg-free, and dairy-free.

During the launch, Michelin star chef Sau del Rosario who was among the first to sample unMEAT, described it as “the taste is like you got it from the oven. It’s tasty, it’s clean, and it’s very delicious. I would put this in my menu!”

It comes in four variants: Nuggets, Hungarian Sausages, Minced Meat and Burger Patty. CNPF aims to market the range as close to the price of real meat counterparts in keeping with its goal of providing affordable nutrition.

In the Philippines, unMEAT was first introduced through Shakey’s Pizza’s newest offering, the Goood Burger. It has since attracted a small cult following in the few weeks it has top-billed Shakey’s Pizza chain’s foray to burgers.

Now, as the plant-based food mania continues to sweep the world over, Century Pacific Food Inc., is giving consumers easy access to healthy and tasty 100% plant-based food options as unMEAT is now available via online shopping platforms, and increasingly in supermarkets and specialty stores nationwide.

Following unMEAT’s successful initial rollout as Shakey’s Goood Burger, CNFP will also be partnering with more restaurants in the country. Additionally, the company’s Global Brands Team has started offering the product to customers across a network of 80 countries such as the USA, Singapore, China and the Middle East giving consumers in many parts of the world easy access to tasty, healthy, and affordable 100% plant-based meat alternative.

“This newest addition to our product portfolio further strengthens our company’s mission to provide affordable nutrition for all. UnMEAT is both very affordable and delicious!” added Dizon.

Now it’s possible to be healthy while enjoying what you eat with the 100% plant-based unMEAT.

With the advent of the grid parity era, technological advanced PV plants equipped with high-efficiency solar modules are gradually coming under the spotlight of global users.

Some people hold that larger modules bring more value. Is this really the case?

As is known to all, solar modules, which are the core component of a PV power plant system, have a crucial impact on the stability, durability and efficient operation of the plant.

Comprehensively considering reliability and safety, the proper increase in module size can improve the product power and decrease the LCOE (levelized cost of energy).

On the other hand, we shall clarify misunderstandings. That is, bigger is not always better. What the market needs is always a product with optimal quality and value.

Just the Size

If we only focus on the size of a module can potentially cause a series of problems and risks to power plants and even do harm to revenue.

Which size

is the best choice for a quality station?

Let’s start from the entire life cycle.

Transportation

PV modules are shipped to all parts of the world mainly by container.

The current most widely accepted method for loading modules into a container is to place them on a pallet vertically in landscape orientation.

The standard module size is designed based on international container sizes and is calculated against various parameters, taking into consideration the risk of cracks and other damage during transportation.

“BIG ≠ SUITABLE”

(1) Risk of microcracks or breakage during transportation increases if the module size is too large.

(2) Risk of falling increases if the modules are laid upright.

Installation

In combining ergonomics and design, the optimal module width is derived from the natural expansion width of human arms.

“BIG ≠ BEST”

(1) The size of the module should be designed for easy handling by two persons, ensuring both safety and reliability.

(2) Too large a module size will cause problems in handling and installation.

Install on Rooftops

Digging deeper into maximizing revenues from limited installation area, higher module efficiency is the key.

(1) Higher efficiency represents more system capacity in limited areas.

(2) Reducing weight burden on structures opens a lot of opportunities.

(3) Use 550Wp module as benchmark, a simple comparison of 27,2kg (10.6kg/sqm) and 32.6kg (12.5kg/sqm), which one is more acceptable from owner’s perspective?

Application

Various factors need to be taken into consideration when defining module size.

An excessively large size may, for example, result in risk of hot spots and may also bring challenges and risks to load capacity.

At the same time, the resistance of the module will also decrease. The larger module is, the more likely the glass is to break under external forces such as sand and gravel.

“BIG ≠ RELIABLE”

It takes time to verify long-term reliability under extreme weather conditions.

Conclusion

Unlimited expansion of module sizes should not be the first choice to reduce the LCOE.

Bigger modules may result in inconvenience during product installation and maintenance.

A continual increase in size will also hinder the standardization of module products and impact the healthy and sustainable development of the industry.

It is essential to comprehensively consider reliability and safety during the entire life cycle of a power station when designing PV modules.

Which size PV module is the best choice for high-quality power stations in the grid parity era?
