Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PCPPI)—the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country—reaffirms its focus on sustainable business practices as it announced its recent wins on environmental protection and stewardship.

Recognizing the role of private sectors in minimizing plastic wastes that end up in the environment, PCPPI continues to practice light weighting to reduce their virgin plastic content in plastic packaging. The company said it had already reduced about 118 metric tons of plastic resin as of September 2021. This equates to almost six million single-serve Pepsi polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. PCPPI has also saved 36,000 kilograms of carton as secondary packaging through the light weighting initiative.

“PCPPI has fervently elevated our business practices to benefit the environment and the people. It’s still a long journey towards achieving plastic neutrality, but we are happy to see that we are making remarkable progress and positive impact on the environment,” said PCPPI president and chief executive officer Frederick D. Ong.

In 2020, PCPPI was able to save 76 metric tons or about 3.8 million single-serve PET bottles.

Clean-up Drives

PCPPI is also bolstering its water stewardship initiatives through its participation in various localized coastal clean-up activities. The company’s regional offices in Batangas, La Union, Cagayan De Oro, and Davao partnered with local government units and Environment and Natural Resources offices to collect wastes along coastal areas and bodies of water.

The company also supported the community clean-up drives and waste management activities by providing segregation bins in Sto. Tomas, Batangas and Rosario, La Union.

For their part, PCPPI Cagayan De Oro volunteered to participate in the Limpyo Dagat Program of Cagayan De Oro City to clean the stretch of Cagayan de Oro coast. Since 2019, PCPPI is the only private organization participating in the said program.

As part of its water stewardship program, PCPPI has adopted six water-bodies to create and implement sustained and long-term protection projects, together with partner local government units.

“The company respects water as its main resource and as everyone’s fundamental right. Through these activities, we are allowing our business to thrive sustainably, while benefitting the lives of the communities around us,” said Ong.

PCPPI is the exclusive manufacturer of well-known beverage brands in the Philippines: Pepsi-Cola, Mountain Dew, 7-Up, Mirinda, Mug, Gatorade, Tropicana, Lipton, Sting, Premier, Milkis, and Aquafina.

Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PCPPI)—the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country—partners with Southville International School and Colleges (SISC) to benefit employees who wish to continue learning and further their education.

The discount is applicable in select courses from SISC and Southville International School Affiliated with Foreign Universities (SISFU).

SISFU offers academic programs from foreign countries which are recognized for its high quality and standards. Graduates from these programs will also receive diplomas or certificates from the foreign academic institutions.

“PCPPI believes in developing talents from within. Through our partnership with SISC and SISFU, we want to inspire our employees to continue learning to achieve their personal and career aspirations,” said PCPPI president and chief executive officer Frederick D. Ong.

The partnership also targets PCPPI employees who, due to life’s circumstances, were not able to finish their studies to finally get degreed. Since the programs are online, it gives them opportunity to combine education with work.

“This program reinforces our commitment to make PCPPI a great workplace to grow.  We thank SISC, a very reputable educational institution, for this opportunity to forward our people capability agenda and propel our talents’ education,” Ong added.

Prostate cancer is one of the top 5 cancers in the Philippines and the ninth highest in number of cancer-related deaths among Filipino males according to GLOBOCAN. Despite the statistics, awareness on the disease is very low.

The Philippine Urological Association (PUA), together with the Department of Health (DOH), Cancer Warriors Foundation, Inc., the Philippine Society of Uro-Oncologists (PSUO), and Johnson and Johnson (Philippines), Inc., led the observance of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month with a series of activities that aimed to generate greater awareness for the disease.

With the unified theme Prostate Cancer Sama-Samang Labanan, Tamang Impormasyon Kailangan, efforts were focused on educating the public on the importance of early detection and treatment to slow the progression of prostate cancer.

A lay forum entitled Usapang Prostate Cancer was live streamed via the PUA Prostate Cancer Awareness Facebook page on September 11 to underline truths about the disease. Representatives from the the Department of Health Cancer Control Division and Cancer Warriors Foundation, Inc. also joined the discussion to share what support the government and privately funded organizations can provide patients and their families.

This was followed by free teleconsultations by members of the Philippine Urological Association and the Philippine Urology Residents Association last September 18. More than 300 Filipino males signed up for the free teleconsultation service.

Fighting prostate cancer with information

Awareness on prostate cancer is very low as men do not talk about it in the open and often confuse its early symptoms as signs of aging. These include frequent urination, a weak urine stream, and pain in the lower back, hips, or pelvis. The only bigger warning signs are blood in the urine or semen and pain or burning sensation when urinating.

The risk of prostate cancer increases with age, especially after 50. It can also run in the family, developed through a combination of genes and poor lifestyle. There is no proven prevention strategy for prostate cancer, which is why early diagnosis is important.

“Information is the most important weapon against prostate cancer,” said Dr. Clarito Cairo, program manager of the National Integrated Cancer Control Program, Disease Prevention and Control Bureau of the Department of Health. “The more people know about its early symptoms, the earlier they can get screened. Even in advanced stages, there are treatments available that still allow patients to live a long life.”

“While mostly indolent, prostate cancer needs to be addressed immediately to stop the cancer cells from spreading to other areas of the body,” explained Dr. Ernesto Gerial, president of the Philippine Urological Association. “Disseminating information about who are at risk of the disease and what its symptoms are can save many lives.”

He added: “The lack of noise around prostate cancer has resulted to unequal support for the disease as compared to breast and cervical cancer. While we at the Philippine Urological Association have been hard at work for many years for prostate cancer to finally take the spotlight, we know that we cannot do it alone. That is why we are happy to be partnering with other medical associations, the government, and Johnson & Johnson in creating greater awareness for the disease and extending help to patients.”

“There is hope in prostate cancer,” said Dr. Erwin Benedicto, head of Medical Affairs of Johnson & Johnson’s (Philippines), Inc. “It is a hard fact that most people should know but don’t—not yet.”

“Doctors are our partners in maintaining good health. Supporting them in the fight against prostate cancer is crucial, especially with the COVID-19 pandemic posing several limitations. By working together, information, proper diagnosis, and appropriate treatment for the disease can be made available for all.”

Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia, and Taiwan, continues to support local sellers and uplift the digital economy with the launch of the #TatakPinoy: Shopee Celebrates Local contest. From November 19 to December 5 2021,  users can vote for and support their favorite sellers in time for the 12.12 Big Christmas Sale.

#TatakPinoy: Shopee Celebrates Local recognizes 12 Filipino sellers who offer locally made products and their inspiring journeys to success with Shopee. Besides having to source and offer goods that are proudly Pinoy, the brand also shortlisted these entrepreneurs, who come from various categories such as lifestyle, fashion, and FMCG, based on shop ratings and number of reviews.

Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines, said, “As we rebound from the impact of the pandemic, we want to strengthen our efforts in aiding economic recovery. Supporting local sellers is a very impactful way to do that, and we want to rally our users to support these sellers as well. This is what Shopee Supports Local is for -- highlighting the local sellers in our platform, and giving our shoppers the opportunity to show their appreciation as well.”

Supporting Local Sellers, Key to Aiding Economic Recovery

With the pandemic driving consumers to rely more on e-commerce platforms for their needs, more brands and sellers continue to embrace digitalization to sustain their livelihoods. Recently, the Philippines saw an increase of 12 million new digital consumers since the start of the pandemic, of which 63% are from non-metro areas. Shopee continues to improve the platform to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) catering to the needs of the Filipinos.

The top three sellers, based on total user votes, will win gadget prizes that are useful for their online business. On top of that, theirs and a few other shortlisted sellers’ inspiring stories and sought-after products will be featured on Shopee Live on December 8 and 11.

Meanwhile, users who will participate in voting and share why they love their chosen seller on social media will have the chance to win special vouchers.

Through Shopee Live, she received customer feedback which helped them improve the store.

Chelssydresstaytay.ph

Luxeessential

As a form of self-care, Hani of Luxe Essential decided to put up an online store where she can earn while staying at home. Despite the ups and downs of online selling, her determination eventually paid off, and can now support not only her family but her staff’s family as well.

Uniq.mnl

Uniq.mnl is owned by Ireen and Ira, two sisters who combined their stores into one. Transitioning wasn’t easy and they worked hard to maintain customer satisfaction by utilizing Shopee’s in-app tools. With clear goals, the shop ended 2020 with an 8-figure gross profit.

Wanting to share their expertise in the homecare industry, Mico from Mightyclean started his Shopee Seller journey during the height of the pandemic last year. Even though he had become one of the best-selling brands on the platform, he never stopped learning new things and continued to sharpen his entrepreneurial skills.

Dnemnlph

Dana of dnemnlph started selling online when she was in high school and has had her fair share of ups and downs before she first joined Shopee in 2015. Despite having to close her shop temporarily, she stepped up and worked with her Shopee Relationship Manager to learn how to build brand awareness for her store. To date, she has more than 225,000 shop followers.

Localidad.ph

Daniel of Localidad began his Shopee journey last year and got his break in November 2020. His experience on Shopee was a great opportunity to learn about e-commerce in general and eventually succeed in the industry, with more than 60,000 products sold and counting.

Emsalvadorpunzalan

Em used the power of technology to offer a wide array of DIY car care detailing products through her shop Prestige Trading. As a former saleswoman, the main proprietor found joy in interacting and connecting with their customers.
