The 2024 Philippine National Cancer Summit (PNCS) marked a pivotal moment in the nation's fight against cancer, spotlighting the transformative potential of the National Integrated Cancer Control Act (NICCA) in enhancing early detection, diagnosis, and treatment.




Cancer continues to be a significant public health issue, contributing to 7.84% of the country's disease burden and ranking as the third highest cause of Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALY). Breast cancer is the most common among women, accounting for 31.4% of cases, while lung cancer is the most prevalent and deadliest among men, with 19.5% of cases.




Against the backdrop of these daunting statistics, the two-day summit, themed “Advancing Integrated Cancer Care Systems for the Filipino,” offered new hope and direction, aligning with the goals of the NICCA.




Enacted on February 14, 2019, the NICCA provides a comprehensive framework to ensure the availability of quality and affordable cancer care services, aiming to improve survival rates and alleviate the financial burden on patients and their families.




Dr. Manuel Francisco “Ramy” Roxas, chairperson of the Philippine College of Surgeons Cancer Commission Foundation (PCS CanCom), which spearheaded the summit, highlighted the event's importance in bringing together stakeholders from various sectors to improve cancer care.




“We are very honored that many dignitaries are joining us today to make this cancer summit even better than last year. But the task ahead is still long and challenging. We are here to listen to each other and inspire each other to continue to improve cancer care for our people,” he stated, emphasizing a "whole of society" approach to the cancer fight.





In his keynote address read by Philippine Cancer Center Head Dr. Alfonso Nunez III, Department of Health Secretary Teodoro “Ted” Herbosa pointed out the significant challenge cancer poses to public health and its expensive consequences. He stressed the need to educate and inform communities about health-maintaining behaviors and disease prevention.




“Our endeavors covered the end-to-end spectrum of care with a strong emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention,” Herbosa remarked. “Central to our national cancer strategy is the early and regular screening measures such as sparing sufficient time for regular physical checkups. That includes breast examination, specifically mammograms, cervical screening, and many more. These services are available and accessible. Early detection saves lives by enabling timely interventions when treatment outcomes are most favorable.”




Meanwhile, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos, Jr. underscored the critical role that local government units (LGUs) play in integrating national guidelines with local needs as the primary implementers of healthcare policies.




He aims to unite stakeholders to devise a unified plan for cancer care at the local government level, saying “We should really sit down, look at the capacity of each, harmonize everything, and do a master plan. That is what I commit to this group that we're going to do.”




At the LGU level, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte shared the city's efforts. “We are in the process of crafting the localized version of the NICCA. The city government can allocate a more significant amount of resources kapag mayroon na tayong local version of the national law. Hopefully, this can be done by the second quarter of this year,” she said.




Belmonte also stated that their overarching goal is to develop and maintain a system that combines scientific advancements and practical applications into a comprehensive program aimed at reducing cancer morbidity and mortality, especially in Quezon City.




The PNCS 2024, held on February 29 and March 1 at Novotel Araneta, served as a vital platform for stakeholders to collaborate and share innovations in cancer care, aiming to change the landscape of cancer treatment and management in the Philippines.




By focusing on the importance of early screening and intervention for the most common cancers, the summit sought to gather collective efforts toward a future where cancer is no longer a daunting foe for Filipinos, ensuring access to necessary care and support for everyone.

Sun Life Philippines and Sun Life Financial-Philippines Foundation, Inc., in line with their commitment to help Filipinos live healthier lives, recently unveiled a newly refurbished basketball court in the Legacy of Light Village, a resettlement model community that the Sun Life Foundation helped develop in Calauan, Laguna. This is part of the “Hoops + Health” program, a PHP 40 million partnership with Beyond Sport, a global sport-for-social-change organization. The program aims to leverage the power of basketball to encourage physical activity and promote healthier lifestyles by renovating basketball courts across Asia.



The inauguration event, held on February 28, 2024, at the Legacy of Light Village basketball court in Calauan, was attended by Sun Life executives, Sun Life brand ambassador Donny Pangilinan, Beyond Sport representatives, residents of Calauan, and national media.





The basketball court has been transformed with fresh coats of paint, upgraded facilities, and new, state-of-the-art basketball hoops. After 14 weeks of hands-on training in urban and rural agriculture techniques, at least 39 farmer beneficiaries of the SM Foundation’s Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan Sustainable Agriculture Program in Bulacan successfully graduated recently.

As a steadfast advocate of green and sustainable living, SM Supermalls, through its corporate social responsibility arm, SM Foundation Inc., gears to support the government’s food security agenda through said agriculture program.

In SM City Marilao, the SMFI-KSK commencement was attended by 16 graduates who underwent urban farming, a technique designed to maximize the limited space for food production and sustainability. It targets providing low-income urban communities with essential skills in high-value crop farming by transforming underutilized urban spaces into productive gardens.

Meanwhile, SM Center Pulilan marked the completion of at least 23 graduates who focused mainly on rural farming.

In addition to SMFI-KSK certificates, the graduates received their National Certificate II from TESDA, providing them with opportunities for career advancement in the farming sector.

Aside from the presentation of certificates, market tours with SM Markets were held, allowing the trainees to explore and understand marketing opportunities in farming.

With its vision to bring back hope by directly working with farmers, SM Foundation’s KSK training focuses on several facets of farming, including land preparation, seedling, fertilizer concoction, sustainability workshops and forums, financial literacy and bookkeeping, pricing and costing, as well as product development.

The program is in partnership with the local government units in Bulacan, the Department of Agriculture (DA), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Department of Tourism (DOT), SM Markets, SM Supermalls, and D' Planners Training Center Inc.

The Philippine Life Insurance Association, Inc. (PLIA) member companies have elected Sun Life Grepa President Richard S. Lim to the PLIA Board as President. The induction of officers led by Insurance Commissioner (IC) Hon. Reynaldo A. Regalado was held on February 6, 2024 at Dusit Thani Manila.





This follows Lim's dedicated service as Treasurer in 2022, showcasing his commitment to the advancement of the life insurance industry.



In his acceptance speech, Lim expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in this capacity. "I thank the PLIA membership and my fellow 2024 Board members for their vote of confidence in choosing me to lead the industry as PLIA President.”



Furthermore, President Lim emphasized PLIA’s purpose to enhance financial literacy and raise awareness about life insurance, aligning with the government's goal of fostering financial inclusion and making financial products affordable and available to all.



“The mission of PLIA encompasses three key pillars. Firstly, we are dedicated to supporting industry growth by increasing awareness and accessibility of life insurance, empowering our financial advisors to educate clients on financial preparedness. Secondly, we prioritize Filipinos’ welfare by fostering trust, transparency, and resilience in delivering insurance promises, while also safeguarding their privacy and consumer protection rights. Lastly, we aim to enhance stakeholder engagement, addressing relevant industry issues, and creating new capabilities to serve them better and help our members build scale."



With these goals in mind, President Lim reiterated the collective effort needed to achieve success. “Working together, we aim to bring about positive changes that will uplift our regulatory environment, serve as enablers to the market players in bringing out their utmost potential toward the progressive development of our industry. Donny Pangilinan is a certified Chickenjoyer and Joshua Garcia can’t have enough of the Crispylicious, Juicylicious Chickenjoy!




For the first time in Chickenjoy history, Jollibee brought together enthusiasts of its well-loved fried chicken at the day-long “I Am A Chickenjoyer Fan Meet” at Trinoma Activity Center last February 17.



This joy-filled event gathered families and friends adding up to over 1,500 individuals to celebrate their shared love for the iconic Chickenjoy.

On top of celebrating their love for Chickenjoy, fans bonded with the actor and Jollibee ambassador Joshua Garcia






“We are so excited to finally bring so many Chickenjoyers together in one venue and host an exciting day for them,” said Pamie Cruz, Senior Marketing Manager of Jollibee Philippines. “This is our way of thanking them for their continued support for Chickenjoy, and for spreading this love to their families and friends from all over the country and even all over the world.”


Guests engaged in a slew of activities detailed in their event passports. From conquering the Claw Machine to trying their luck at the Giant Gachapon and mastering the Ball Bucket Shoot Out, attendees collected points, won limited-edition Chickenjoy merchandise, and created lasting memories. To add, a professional studio setup awaited guests, capturing their moments through expertly taken photos and videos.

In the car, my dad would ask us what we wanted and of course, we wanted Chickenjoy. We’d share it in the car before driving off again, feeling satisfied.”


Joshua added his own vivid Chickenjoy moments: “With my family, it’s always a tradition to order Jollibee when it’s someone’s birthday. My nephew loves Chickenjoy, so I would bring him a bucket on his birthday and we’d share it with Jolly Spaghetti or rice. My favorite part is the chicken wing—I love the experience of removing the bone and dipping the wing in the gravy. Sarap!”
