(L-R) GCash for business general manager Jong Layug, officially leads the opening of the 2025 TNAP Convention.

Major retail chain Puregold has again partnered with GCash to expand the use of digital payments by sari-sari store owners at the 2025 Tindahan ni Aling Puring (TNAP) Convention, the country’s largest trade event for sari-sari store owners and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

The three-day event drew tens of thousands of participants, most of whom still rely on physical cash to manage and run their small businesses. While digital adoption has grown in recent years, cash remains the dominant mode of payment among sari-sari store owners when purchasing inventory.

GCash offered TNAP attendees a range of promotions and incentives to encourage merchants to shift to digital transactions. These include pre-convention campaigns, real-time cashback, and exclusive product discounts for users who pay with GCash at partner booths. The leading finance super app also set up an on-site activation booth in collaboration with Puregold, showcasing how digital tools can help store owners streamline payments, manage capital, and track purchases.

GCash for business general manager Jong Layug stated that the initiative is part of the company’s broader strategy to integrate digital financial services into traditional retail channels and foster digital habits among small-scale entrepreneurs.

“GCash is committed to helping Filipino MSMEs grow by giving them access to safe, convenient, and rewarding digital payment options. At TNAP, we’re bringing this mission to life by making every digital transaction count, whether through savings, rewards, or efficiency,” Layug said.

The partnership comes as Puregold seeks to deepen its role in the country’s digital transition. The retail giant, whose TNAP program is designed to support its extensive sari-sari store network, has been working to improve payment infrastructure at its stores and trade events to reduce friction in B2B transactions.

“Puregold has always believed in the power of MSMEs. By partnering with GCash, we are equipping our TNAP members with tools to thrive in a digital economy,” said Puregold president Vincent Co.

The participation of GCash in TNAP 2025 marks a continued push to embed financial technology into grassroots enterprises, positioning digital tools as drivers of growth and efficiency in the informal economy.

Two more agreements include the Quadripartite MOA signed between DSWD, LANDBANK, Treasury, and GCash to accelerate the processing of social protection and public welfare services

(L-R) GCash public sector head Cleo Celeste C. Santos, business head Edgardo R. Layug Jr., DSWD partnerships building and resource mobilization assistant secretary Marie Rafael, and GCash manager for public sector-national accounts Alda Lou Cabrera

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has signed two new agreements with GCash, the country’s leading finance app and largest cashless ecosystem, to strengthen the digitalization of its services, enabling faster transactions for social protection and public welfare.

The first agreement is a Quadripartite Memorandum of Agreement (QMOA) with the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr), Land Bank of the Philippines (Landbank), and GCash which integrates the country’s leading finance app into the agency’s Minors Travelling Abroad (MTA) clearance platform and its newly launched Harmonized Electronic License and Permit System (HELPS).

“Our engagement with GCash is a big help for the MTA in terms of paying the fees for the travel clearance. We’re exploring direct payments from our clients to GCash, enabling them to expedite the approval of their documents. We also see the need to expand partnerships with GCash, not just for the minors travelling abroad, but also for other social protective services programs that are handled by the Department of Social Welfare and Development,” said DSWD Protective Services Bureau Director IV Edmon Monteverde.

The MTA system regulates travel for minors going abroad, a government program to safeguard against child trafficking. By using GCash, clients can now settle fees remotely, streamlining applications and accelerating approvals.

Meanwhile, the HELPS platform allows NGOs and charitable institutions to process their accreditation, licensing, and permit applications online, which will now have built-in digital payments through GCash.

“We launched HELPS to solve long-standing inefficiencies. With the upcoming integration of GCash to the HELPS platform, turnaround times will surely improve significantly,” said DSWD Standards Bureau Director IV Atty. Megan Manahan.

As the designated payment channel, GCash collects the fees, which are then remitted through LANDBANK and credited to the Bureau of the Treasury, in line with national fund-handling rules, tapping the millions of users on the GCash app.

“This partnership ensures transparent and secure public collections,” said the Bureau of the Treasury Director Maura Lizza Espina. “It exemplifies how digital platforms can support public finance reform.”

LANDBANK Assistant Vice President and Batasan Branch Head Jessica Galorio explained the flow: “LANDBANK serves as a settlement bank for the collections of DSWD through GCash, to be credited to the Bureau of Treasury.”

Santos, and business head Edgardo R. Layug Jr., with DSWD standards bureau director IV Atty. Megan Therese Y. Manahan, director Edmon B. Monteverde, protective services bureau director IV Sharon P. Almanza, treasurer of the Philippines, represented by director Maura Lizza Espina of the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr), and LandBank of the Philippines–Batasan branch head, assistant vice president Jessica B. Galorio

Supporting the Kaagapay Donations Portal for faster disaster response

In a second agreement, the DSWD and GCash formalized a Memorandum of Agreement for the Kaagapay Donations Portal, which allows Filipinos to donate digitally to vulnerable groups and communities in crisis.

“This MOA expands our capacity to respond to emergencies,” said DSWD Assistant Secretary Marie Rafael. “GCash makes it possible for ordinary citizens to send help directly to DSWD-accredited organizations with just a few taps.”

The Kaagapay Donations Portal supports charitable donations rather than service payments. It allows contributors from across the country and abroad to extend assistance to children under treatment, victims of calamities, and low-income families in need of urgent support.

“The goal is to democratize giving,” added Rafael. “GCash allows donations regardless of geography or transaction size, enabling more Filipinos to take part in rebuilding lives.”

These efforts fall under GCash’s broader vision of “Finance for All,” a mission that aligns with the government’s drive for inclusive digitalization and e-governance. By making public services and philanthropic giving accessible via mobile devices, GCash is helping reshape how Filipinos interact with government and civil society.

“We’re proud to be a partner in nation-building,” said GCash head of GCash for Business Edgardo Layug Jr. “From social welfare disbursements to digital donations, these agreements reflect our commitment to inclusive fintech. This is what Finance for All looks like.”

Pru Life UK, the first life insurer in the Philippines to receive a Takaful license, continues to demonstrate its commitment to inclusive education and sustainable community development by providing digital learning equipment to three community madaris or Islamic schools in Bangkal, Davao City, in collaboration with its advocacy partners, Humble Sustainability and LiteHaus International.

During a turnover activity at Ummoul Khair Maahad, students, teachers, school principals, and local community leaders from Darul Khair Islamic Center, Maahad Talomo Al-Islamie, and Al Madrasah Al-Arabia Wal-Islamiyah received laptops, projectors, and white screens.

This donation is part of Pru Life UK’s Adopt-a-Madrasah program, launched in Davao in 2024 to support the company’s community investment efforts in Mindanao. The programme supports the educational needs of the madaris.

The donation was partly funded by the proceeds from Pru Life UK’s partnership with circular economy start-up Humble Sustainability that securely disposed the insurer’s unused IT equipment, including old gadgets donated by employees, by selling these through its network. Another partner, LiteHaus International, an NGO and digital equity advocacy, was tapped in sourcing the donated equipment that included repurposed computers.

Obesity is a topic that’s often talked about, but not always understood. It’s easy to hear the word and think it’s just about food or exercise—but after attending a recent talk on Novo Nordisk’s ‘Truth About Weight’ campaign, I realized there’s so much more to it. As the company marks 25 years of obesity research, they’re bringing the conversation to the Philippines to help shed light on the science, the stigma, and the real stories behind this complex health issue.

A recent study from the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) shows that 4 out of 10 Filipino adults are now living with obesity. This trend reflects notable changes in health patterns. Similarly, children and adolescents face challenges as lifestyle changes, increased consumption of processed food, and reduced physical activity contribute to health issues for future generations. Despite the high prevalence of obesity, it often remains obscured by other health concerns, yet it serves as a critical driver for a host of serious chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer1.

Recognizing the urgency of this public health challenge, Novo Nordisk is proud to launch its 'Truth About Weight' campaign in the Philippines — a global initiative spearheading the fight against obesity through awareness, education, and advocacy. With 25 years of dedicated research globally in obesity treatment and a commitment to improving patient outcomes, Novo Nordisk aims to transform the narrative surrounding obesity from one of stigma to one of support and understanding.

“Obesity is one of the most misunderstood and undertreated health challenges we face today. It is not merely a lifestyle choice, it is a pressing serious chronic disease,” stated Wei Sun, General Manager of Novo Nordisk Philippines. “Through the Truth About Weight campaign, we seek to empower Filipinos with accurate information and helpful resources to help them understand obesity as a disease and encourage them to access the care they need.”

Obesity is a Disease

At the heart of the Truth About Weight campaign is a vital message: obesity is not the result of poor lifestyle choices alone; it is a chronic, complex disease influenced by genetics, environmental conditions, hormones, and psychological factors.23 Dr. Ma. Corazon del Mundo, psychiatrist and diplomate member of Philippine Psychiatric Association (PPA), further explains, "Unfortunately, weight stigma and misinformation are deeply ingrained in our society. Individuals affected by obesity often face shame and judgment, not only externally but also within healthcare environments. This stigma can prevent them from seeking the treatment they deserve.”

The Truth About Weight campaign seeks to combat misinformation and the stigma surrounding obesity. Central to this initiative is the Truth About Weight website, which serves as a comprehensive resource hub. It offers scientific insights into the nature of weight and obesity, a free weight health risk assessment, educational tools, inspiring stories to promote understanding, and resources that guide individuals to seek professional help.

“Our goal is to shift the conversation from blame to understanding and from stigma to support,” Dr. Cyrus Pasamba, senior medical manager of Novo Nordisk Philippines added. “Obesity transcends mere aesthetics; it is a legitimate disease that warrants serious attention, robust resources, and, above all, compassion.”

Novo Nordisk calls upon all Filipinos to proactively engage in their health by visiting Truth About Weight website. This site not only provides a free health risk assessment but also access to reliable, science-based information about obesity. Filipinos are encouraged to share insights from the campaign with family and friends and to consult healthcare professionals if they have concerns regarding their weight.

“The silence surrounding obesity must end. It is a disease that we must treat with urgency and seriousness,” Wei Sun concluded. “The Truth About Weight campaign is more than an awareness initiative; it is a movement toward change, dignity, and improved health for every Filipino.”

Obesity isn’t something that can be solved overnight, but learning the truth about it is a great place to start. With 25 years of research behind them, Novo Nordisk is helping more people understand what obesity really is through the ‘Truth About Weight’ campaign. By spreading awareness and clearing up common myths, we can all take small steps toward better health—for ourselves and for others.

There’s something comforting—almost cinematic—about sinking your teeth into a slice of New York-style pizza. That blistered crust, gooey cheese, and generous toppings feel like a warm, cheesy hug after a long day. Now, pizza lovers in Caloocan can indulge in that same East Coast experience, as Yellow Cab has officially opened its doors at SM City Grand Central.

Tucked along the mall’s vibrant international food strip, the new Yellow Cab branch brings its signature urban flair and bold flavors into a cozy yet contemporary corner perfect for catch-ups, casual dates, or solo cravings. It's the kind of place that makes you say, “Let’s grab a slice,” and mean it.

At the heart of Yellow Cab’s menu is a lineup of pizzas that are as unapologetically loaded as they are delicious. There’s the iconic New York’s Finest, a heavyweight ensemble of sausage, ham, pepperoni, bacon, ground beef, black olives, mushrooms, and bell peppers that’s practically a meal in every bite. Meanwhile, meat lovers will feel right at home with the Manhattan Meat Lovers—a rich combination of pepperoni, salami, ground beef, and all the meat trimmings that make pizza nights worth the calories.

If you’re feeling a little adventurous, the Black Balsamic pizza adds a gourmet twist to the usual fare, layering cheese and arugula over a medley of toppings, all kissed with tangy balsamic drizzle.

For those counting carbs but not ready to skip the pizza party, Dear Darla is a fresh and guilt-free option. With its ultra-thin crust and bundles of arugula and alfalfa sprouts, it’s the kind of “clean eating” that still feels indulgent.

But Yellow Cab’s kitchen doesn’t stop at pizza. The beloved Charlie Chan pasta offers a unique fusion of sweet-spicy flavors with its Asian-inspired stir-fry of noodles, chicken, and peanuts—a dish that has long held cult status among Yellow Cab loyalists. And yes, there’s chicken. Plenty of it. Perfectly seasoned, fried to perfection, and ideal for sharing.

Whether you’re in it for the classics or ready to explore something a little out of the (pizza) box, Yellow Cab at SM City Grand Central delivers flavors that hit the spot. Drop by the lower ground level of the mall and treat yourself to a slice of the Big Apple—no passport required.

Let’s be honest—shopping for dads is tricky business. They’re lowkey, rarely ask for anything, and when they do, it’s usually something ultra-specific like a “cordless impact drill with variable speed control” (what?). But this Father’s Day, it doesn’t have to be a head-scratcher. Whether you call him Pops, Daddy, Tatay, or ‘Chief,’ SM Bulacan Malls—SM City Marilao, SM Center Pulilan, and SM City Baliwag—have the kind of gifts that make actual sense for the kind of guy who’s been your personal handyman, chef, driver, and real-life superhero all rolled into one.

1 1

We rounded up the best finds for the sentimental dads, the sporty dads, the tech-savvy dads, and even the aesthetic dads who steal your cologne. Here’s your ultimate guide to winning Father’s Day:

1 2

  • A Gift of MemoriesGot a dad who documents everything from your graduation to his backyard barbecue setup? Hit up SM Gadgets at The SM Store in SM City Marilao and SM City Baliwag. Whether it’s a GoPro for his weekend cycling vlogs or the Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo for capturing family moments retro-style, you’re basically giving him a time machine in his pocket. Bonus: You’ll finally be in more family albums that aren’t blurry.

1 3
  • A Gift of Time. Dad’s been giving you his time since day one—it’s about time he got something timeless in return. Head over at the MI Concept store in SM City Marilao and grab him a smart or classic watch that matches his hustle. From work calls to weekend bike rides, it’s more than an accessory—it’s a daily reminder that you see him.

1 4
  • A Gift of Fashion and FitnessFor the dad who still breaks a sweat doing jumping jacks in slippers (respect), update his workout gear at Sports Central, SM Center Pulilan. Think comfy activewear, stylish sneakers, and dri-fit shirts that shout, “Fit and still fabulous.” Trust us, he’ll be posting OOTD gym selfies before you know it.

1 5
  • A Gift of Scent-sibility. Cologne might be small, but it packs big dad energy. Whether he’s loyal to his all-time favorite scent or open to exploring something fresh, Ian Darcy at SM City Baliwag and Bench stores across all three malls have just the thing. Pro-tip: Pick a scent that matches his vibe—clean and fresh for the cool dad, woody and spicy for the boss dad, or sweet and mellow for the superdad-next-door.

1 6
  • A Gift of CoolYou could gift Dad another necktie. Or you could blow his mind with JBL headphones—available at select tech stores of SM City Baliwag and SM Center Pulilan and JBL store in SM City Marilao. Local cafe accepting GCash payments

Digital payments in the Philippines have taken a leap forward with the introduction of Tap to Pay, a next-generation contactless payment system designed to offer customer convenience through effortless, quick, and secure transactions. Developed through a collaboration between Singapore-based fintech firm Open Fabric and the country’s leading finance super app and largest cashless ecosystem, GCash, the initiative aims to modernize the way Filipinos pay.

The collaboration paved the way for a faster and more seamless integration with Mastercard. This technological platform allows GCash users to send payments to merchants that accept Mastercard across the Philippines in a secure and more convenient way.

The system leverages Open Fabric’s encrypted tokenization transaction technology, ensuring that payments remain secure and operational even in areas with limited connectivity—a key consideration especially in the Philippines, where digital infrastructure remains uneven.

Tap to Pay enables GCash users to complete transactions simply by tapping their NFC-enabled Android phone on any compatible point-of-sale (POS) terminal that accepts card payments. This greatly enhances the use of the GCash app as users can now pay using GCash to merchants that accept Mastercard across the Philippines.

"At GCash, we continuously push the boundaries of digital payments to deliver a faster, more secure, and more inclusive cashless experience for Filipinos," said GCash vice president and head of product innovation Ferdie Perez. "We believe that ensuring tech leadership is critical, and with the Open Fabric platform helping enable Tap to Pay, the next stage of digital transactions is achieved— and one that aligns with the pace of the country’s fast-evolving digital economy."

“GCash’s Tap to Pay solution is a game-changer, demonstrating how account tokenization and contactless technology can bridge gaps in financial access. We’re honoured to collaborate with GCash on this milestone. We look forward to scaling its impact– empowering more Filipinos with inclusive and next-generation payment experiences," said Soma Ramasamy, founder and CEO of Open Fabric.

The move reflects a broader global trend towards tap and go payments, already well established in countries like Singapore, Japan, and the United States. With Open Fabric’s infrastructure, the collaboration ensures that Filipinos gain access to the same level of efficiency and security that has become standard in more advanced digital economies.

A financially inclusive payments landscape

The expansion of GCash into NFC technology signals a shift in the local fintech landscape, where QR codes have long dominated digital transactions. While the Philippines’ reliance on cash remains high, the increasing adoption of contactless payments—fueled by growing smartphone penetration and consumer preference for frictionless transactions—suggests a transition towards a more digital-first economy.

For GCash, the move is as much about financial inclusion as it is about innovation. The company has positioned itself as a digital enabler, offering services that range from payments and savings to credit and investments. Tap to Pay is the latest addition to its expanding ecosystem, designed to integrate seamlessly into everyday commerce.

The best way to honor the nation’s independence? Through the language every Filipino understands—food.

On June 12, as the country waves its flags high, let your taste buds sing the national anthem with dishes that tell the story of resilience, unity, and the richness of our heritage. From comfort food with ancestral roots to cool desserts that remix tradition, these must-try dishes available at SM Center Sangandaan, SM City Grand Central, and SM City Valenzuela are perfect for your Araw ng Kalayaan spread.

Whether you're a foodie rebel, a heritage stan, or just craving something hearty and local, here are six Filipino dishes that proudly scream Lasang Pinoy. Lasang Malaya.

  1. Sinigang na Hipon from Giligan’s, SM Center Sangandaan. Nothing screams "home" louder than a hot bowl of sinigang. With its signature sourness, shrimp, and a healthy serving of kangkong, okra, and eggplant, it’s the kind of dish that brings people together—rain or shine. Whether you’re team sabawan or team kanin overload, Giligan’s Sinigang at SM Center Sangandaan promises the perfect tang to tickle your taste buds.

  1. Kare-Kare from Giligan’s, SM Center Sangandaan. No Filipino gathering is complete without this peanutty wonder. Made with oxtail, tripe, and vegetables simmered in a rich peanut sauce, kare-kare is best enjoyed with bagoong on the side (and yes, extra rice is non-negotiable). Try the one from Giligan’s and let that hearty flavor hug you this June 12.

  1. Sisig from Giligan’s, SM Center Sangandaan. Crunchy, chewy, spicy, and savory—Sisig is the unofficial anthem of every Pinoy barkadahan. At Giligan’s, their take is grilled to perfection, chopped fine, and topped with onions, chilies, and chicharon for that extra crunch. Pair it with rice or pulutan-style with your favorite drink and hear the sizzle that signals one thing: you're about to feast like a true Filipino.

  1. Sizzling Pompano sa Gata from Kuya J’s, SM City Valenzuela. If independence had a flavor, this would be it—bold, creamy, and full of life. Kuya J’s Sizzling Pompano sa Gata is an ode to the country’s love affair with coconut milk and seafood. The pompano is fried just right, laid over sizzling vegetables, and blanketed with rich coconut sauce that’s both indulgent and healthy. A win for seafood lovers and guilt-free eaters alike.

  1. Crispy Pork Belly from Mesa, SM City Grand Central. Golden, glorious, and unapologetically indulgent. Crispy Pork Belly is a deep-fried pork dish that’s juicy on the inside and wickedly crunchy on the outside. It's a guaranteed showstopper on any dining table. For a crispy pork belly that delivers on every bite, get yours at Mesa in SM City Grand Central.

  1. Bebang Halo-Halo, SM City Grand Central and SM City Valenzuela. No Pinoy meal is complete without a cold treat—and Bebang Halo-Halo is here to serve dessert with drama. Forget the typical layering. Bebang hides its prized leche flan at the bottom, giving you a creamy finale after a mix of macapuno, nata, langka, and more premium ingredients. Topped with cloud-like shaved frozen milk, it's been likened to Korean bingsu by TikTokers for good reason. Find Bebang’s best-selling Presidential Halo-Halo (P168) at SM City Valenzuela and SM City Grand Central.

So, this Independence Day, don’t just wave your flag—taste your freedom. These six dishes are more than just food; they’re edible stories of resilience, culture, and celebration. Visit SM Center Sangandaan, SM City Grand Central, and SM City Valenzuela and dig into the flavors of the Philippines.

Because nothing says Mabuhay ang Pilipinas! like a plate (or two) of your favorite Filipino food.
