Jonathan Yabut "Apprentice Asia" Winner Talks for Sun Life's Live Brighter Session

Friday, May 26, 2017
Last May 24th at A Space in Legazpi street, Makati, Sun life conducted a Live Brighter Session featuring Jonathan Yabut. He is the first ever winner of the hit reality show "Apprentice Asia". It is a gathering of bloggers and aspiring financial advisors. Yabut shared the story of how he rose from humble beginnings to become a successful businessman and an in-demand motivational speaker.

Jonathan Yabut, after winning the reality show, served as Chief of Staff for AirAsia. Yabut runs his own company JY Consultancy & Ventures which now operates in Manila, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore. He shared how he won the TV competition, his life experience, work tips and principles.

Here's a rundown of 5 important things he shared:

1.Success is when preparation meets opportunity.
He won Apprentice Asia not because he is the brightest person among the contestants but because   he is the most prepared among them.

2.You don't need to say yes to every opportunity.
Successful people practice Triage. Triage is the procedure of assigning levels of priority to   tasks or individuals to determine the most effective order in which to deal with them.
Steve Jobs once said "I am proud of what we don't do, as I am with what we do."

3.In order to stand out, you also need to stand back.
Leadership is pullership, not pushership.
Leadership is being able to influence someone to get that objective done even if that person doesn't like you or even if that person doesn't like his job.

4.It's not about working hard, but smart.
Is there a better way to do it?
Before you even execute and jump into any task, always zoom out first before you zoom in. Ask yourself if it is the best strategy for attacking.

5.The secret to success is out there. It's called Grit.
Grit is passion and perseverance for very long term goals.

JP Cruz is a Sun Life Financial advisor and also shared his personal journey and an inside look at his own career.  He said he once reached rock bottom in both his finances and his love life, and he shared things he did to overcome the struggle. He is now a successful Sun Life advisor and interestingly stressed a thought akin to what Yabut emphasized: that is to to have a deeper reason for the work one pursues. In his case, Cruz finds it by helping people achieve lifetime financial security.

“There's so much inspiration to be had in this Live Brighter Session, between Jonathan's and JP's stories. I'm sure that the bloggers who joined us in the venue and even those who tuned in via Facebook Live found motivation to continue pursuing their dreams and finding a purpose to serve,” Sun Life Financial Advisor Recruitment Manager Fin Bernardo said. “We hope that this also opens to them opportunities that they can enjoy if they become a financial advisor. It's a career that's definitely meaningful, and at the same time financially rewarding.”
