The Volley Hall of Fame

The Philippine National Volleyball training pools are currently working hard to bring their A-game in this year’s Southeast Asian Games to be held in the Philippines this coming November. Whatever the final line-ups will be, the men’s and women’s teams will continue a storied tradition of volleyball excellence when they step on the court to represent our country.

Current volleyball fans may be familiar with today’s collegiate and professional stars, but did you know that the Philippines has produced top players for decades? Philippine volleyball has had quite the glorious history, thanks to the contributions of these five legendary volleybelles:

Nene Ybanez-Chavez

The Philippines has been a superpower in volleyball, especially on the women’s side, ever since it was introduced to the SEA Games in 1977, with the Women’s National Volleyball team ranking second behind Thailand in gold medals won.

Those powerhouse teams were fronted by the likes of Nene Ybanez-Chavez, the 6’1” legend from Southwestern University in Cebu who helped the Philippines dominate the SEA Games in the early ‘90s. She’s best known for leading the women’s team to its last SEA gold in the 1993 games in Singapore, earning the MVP and Best Spiker honors along the way. Possessing extraordinary endurance in the sport, Ybanez-Chavez played competitively until 2013, and now continues to make her mark in Philippine volleyball by coaching a team in the Philippine Super Liga professional league.

Mozzy Crisologo-Ravena

The mother of the famous Ravena phenoms in Philippine basketball is a former volleyball champion in her own right. Mozzy Crisologo-Ravena, the volleyball analyst/sportscaster and University of Santo Tomas alumna, was a two-time UAAP volleyball champion from 1988 to 1992. She also represented the country as a part of the Philippine Youth team in 1988 and the seniors’ team from 1988 to 1989. Today, her legacy lives on through her daughter Dani Ravena, who plays volleyball for the Ateneo Lady Eagles.

Mary Jean Balse-Pabayo

Before Philippine volleyball went mainstream via the collegiate scene, there was Mary Jean Balse-Pabayo, holding up the sport in the country. Balse-Pabayo, from Tagum City, Davao del Norte, is another champion UST alumna and one of the players who carried the Philippines to a bronze medal in the 2005 SEA Games. Balse-Pabayo is still going strong today, currently playing for the Philippine Army Lady Troopers in the Philippine Super Liga and also the Premier Volleyball League, where she is a two-time champion.

Tina Salak

One of the sport’s most successful players, Tina Salak has a storied career representing the country as part of the national team for many years, with huge wins such as the silver finish in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1995 and bronze in Manila in 2005. She also competed in the 2015 SEA Games held in Singapore.

Salak also has a rich professional career, with 10 seasons logged in the Shakey’s V-League and the Philippine Super Liga, where she won five championships and six medals with the Philippine Army Lady Troopers. She’s since retired, going on to work as a coach in the PSL.

Angeli Tabaquero

One of Philippine volleyball’s contemporary stars, Angeli Tabaquero is a renowned collegiate champion, having won titles as part of the UST Golden Tigresses. Tabaquero also represented the country as a member of the Philippine National Team in the 2013 Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship, and as part of the PLDT Home Tvolution national team in another stint in the 2014 Asian Club Championship. An unfortunate injury forced her to retire in 2016 and become a coach for the Adamson Lady Falcons.

The road to the 2019 SEA Games continues

The Philippine Men’s and Women’s National Volleyball Team will compete against the rest of the region from November 28 to December 10 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, Manila. The athletic firepower of current volleyball stars like Alyssa Valdez and Aby Marano brings bright prospects in making the Philippines a regional powerhouse in the international volleyball scene once again.

With the steadfast support of organizations and companies like Rebisco, the national teams will be looking to bring pride and glory to the Philippines when they give their all on the court. Together, Filipinos will again cheer for the national team fighting as Sambansa – or one nation – under the colors of our flag.

Rebisco has been a proponent of Philippine volleyball and various organizations and leagues that comprise it. Aside from supporting the Philippine national team in this year’s SEA Games, Rebisco has also backed the Philippine Women’s Volleyball Team in the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia. The company is also committed to developing the future of the sport with the newly-launched 18-and-under Rebisco Volleyball League.

LBC’s social sellers bazaar highlights commitment to empowering MSMEs

More and more Filipinos are starting to venture into micro, small and medium enterprises nowadays. With technology, anyone can be an entrepreneur and it has served as one of the personal goals for a lot of us – from fresh grads to millennials to retirees. However, starting your own online business may be a daunting task but with the right support, succeeding in it is not a farfetched dream.

In its effort to empower online business owners, leading logistics company LBC Express Inc. held the first-ever So Shop! social sellers bazaar last October 5 at Function Room 4, SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia, Pasay City. Herbalife Nutrition (NYSE: HLF), a premier global nutrition company, recently announced the launch of the Nutrition for Zero Hunger global initiative, pledging $2 million to help end world hunger, ensure people have access to good nutrition and address rising obesity. The initiative, with the assistance of nonprofit partners, will focus on providing access to healthy foods, improving nutrition education, identifying sustainable food resources and raising awareness of the global crisis.

In conjunction with the launch of the initiative, the Company also announced its partnership with Feed the Children, a nonprofit organization committed to defeating childhood hunger worldwide. Feed the Children has designated September as Defeat Hunger Month and as a lead partner of Nutrition for Zero Hunger, Herbalife Nutrition will support their programs to help end hunger around the world.

The Nutrition for Zero Hunger initiative addresses key pandemic problems and through our work with our partners, like Feed the Children, we hope to build a world where everyone has access to quality food and nutrition,” said Alan Hoffman, Executive Vice President, Global Corporate Affairs.

As a leader in the global nutrition, Herbalife Nutrition was founded, nearly 40 years ago, on the importance and value of good nutrition, providing a reliable source of nutritious food through a network of independent distributors to customers worldwide.

Feed the Children is proud to partner with Herbalife Nutrition to address the important issue of childhood hunger,” said Travis Arnold, Feed the Children president and CEO. “The problem cannot be tackled alone. We know that when we combine our efforts, we will have a greater impact on the lives of families who need us most around the world.”

Feed the Children is an organization that is dedicated to supporting families and communities by providing food assistance and resources to help achieve stable lives both in the U.S. and internationally in 10 countries. In 2018, Feed the Children distributed 88.6 million pounds of food and essentials, working with community partners to support 6.5 million people globally.

In addition to supporting strategic partnerships, Nutrition for Zero Hunger aligns with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal #2, which calls for bold action to end hunger in all its forms by 2030, as well as solutions to achieve food security and improve nutrition worldwide. Through the $2 million pledge, the Company will:
  • Partner with organizations addressing hunger, food security and malnutrition
  • Provide in-kind donations of nutritious food and nutrition products to vulnerable people
  • Deliver resources to support nutrition education
  • Engage and educate communities globally through integrated campaigns
Hoffman added, “we have seen how healthy nutrition impacts people’s lives, and we are committed to supporting this critical need to vulnerable populations all around the world.”

UDD X JUST HUSH: COOL AND COLLECTED

Thursday, October 10, 2019

There are musical acts that take the world by storm, there are some that prefer a more slow and steady approach, and then there are those who just play by their own rules. UDD and R&B/hip-hop artist Just Hush fall under the third—both being more comfortable flying under the radar. In effect, they keep up an effortlessly cool reputation, something easily admired by their superfans—those who love the craft of music, rather than just the fame.Up Dharma Down: Armi Millare on keyboards and vocals, Carlos Tañada on guitars and synth, Ean Mayor on drums and electronics, and Paul Yap on bass and synth

UDD, composed of Armi Millare on keyboards and vocals, Carlos Tañada on guitars and synth, Ean Mayor on drums and electronics, and Paul Yap on bass and synth, never fail to charm the hearts of listeners with their eloquent lyrics and unique beats. In the next episode of Coke Studio Season 3, they are paired with up-and-coming artist Just Hush—a reveal that the band tells us was full of surprises. “When I heard how he mixed English and Filipino on his tracks, I was surprised with how he did it. It comes off unexpected but natural. Actually, I had always wanted to do a song in both languages, and I think the band will probably still do one,” says Ean.
Armi admits, “What surprised me was how quiet he was! Because he does rap, we do have this image of what a rapper should be, and he is very different from that.”

Just Hush

On his end, Just Hush was definitely thrilled to be working with one of the greats in OPM, but he was keeping his cool. He shares, “When we first met, I was really excited because I really love their songs. I know they’re a big deal but I didn’t want to show that I was their fanboy! But they were so humble, so down to earth, and that really surprised me.”

When it came to their creative process, Just Hush says, “They’re very open. Even when they knew that I was their fan, I could feel that they didn’t look at me that way. I wanted to mix funk with R&B, and they were also game. In the end, it was very spontaneous. Somehow, we were able to capture the emotion of the moment.”

UDD all agree that their working dynamic flowed effortlessly. “It was on the spot, we were able to work well together.”

Emotion was definitely an important factor, especially since the collab was about letting go of the things that inhibits you and the #feels involved when you have to Let Go and Grow. Surprises aside, the collaboration was a good mesh of the two artists, integrating common elements while still keeping cool, collected and true to their own sound.

Armi adds, “I really like R&B, it’s what I grew up on, and I do think that you can hear it a bit on our music. When it comes to art, somehow you will come to, more or less, the same questions, the same why. So even from different genres and generations, you will still find what feels right.”

Ean sums it up, “I like to think of us as perpetual students. We went out of our comfort zone, but the funny thing is, I am sure that when fans hear the song, they will still say that it’s very us.”

Watch UDD and Just Hush as they collaborate on Coke Studio Season 3. Catch them on October 12, Saturday at 10a.m. on ABS-CBN or subscribe to Coke Studio’s Youtube page at http://www.youtube.com/CokeStudioPH for the latest episodes.
