Beyond COVID-19, HIV and other illnesses deserve attention too

Friday, October 23, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic’s wide-reaching and extraordinary effects particularly to public health and the medical field has, unfortunately, created other grave consequences that have come unnoticed. As focus, as of late, has been on the novel coronavirus, attention on other equally critical illnesses and diseases has seemingly taken a back seat.

Among these illnesses, the World Health Organization (WHO) identifies Tuberculosis or TB, Malaria, and HIV as the among the most serious. In fact, the WHO notes, TB claims 1.5 million lives a year, while NGO Frontline AID states that 38 million people live with HIV worldwide. Of this, 12.6 million or 33% have been unable to access HIV treatments during the pandemic induced lockdowns.

The impact of COVID-19 on HIV programs and patients

A report from UNAIDS reveals that one in four people living with HIV have reported problems with gaining access to important medications. Similarly, HIV programs are among those that have had disruptions in services, with up to 85% of existing programs affected based on a survey by The Global Fund, a partnership that mobilizes and invests funds to support programs towards AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Of even greater concern, Frontline AIDS further observes, is how the coronavirus, alongside HIV and AIDS, has a greater impact on people who are already marginalized. Specifically, it is those most affected by HIV who will feel the brunt of the effects of the coronavirus, especially with how lockdowns and quarantines have made access to much-needed antiretroviral medicines, not to mention visits to hospitals and health centers, extremely difficult.

The importance of HIV protection and prevention

In light of the above situation, and in view of recent data from the DOH-Epidemiology Bureau that shows 2,818 newly-confirmed HIV-positive individuals from January to March of this year, protection from HIV is truly the best way forward.

Actively doing its part in informing the public on the importance of protection, preparedness and education regarding HIV is Durex. Through its latest multimedia Protection & Preparedness Education (PPE) campaign—featuring vlog collaborations, online university talks, and e-learning videos—Durex wants the public to be properly informed and kept safe from HIV during this pandemic. The public is also enjoined to visit Durex Philippines’ official Facebook Page and YouTube Channel, where they can be kept up-to-date and informed.

And since no one is invulnerable to catching HIV in these times, being prepared in encounters – to always come prepared – is a must. And clearly, as we all do our share in preventing the spread of COVID-19, we must also be responsible in protecting ourselves and others from catching HIV.

Creativity knows no boundaries. Even as Filipinos stay at home and take precautionary measures with physical distancing there are those who have found ways to express themselves through art that reflects the new normal.

Three Filipino indie filmmakers have taken on the Mi Pass10n Project challenge to produce short films that reflects life under lockdown, powered by the features of the Mi 10T Series. Che Tagyamon, Glenn Barit, and Sonny Calvento were able to create stunning short films using the impressive camera features of the newly launched Mi 10T Pro phones, which come with a 108 MP camera for Mi 10T Pro, 64 MP triple camera for Mi 10T and 144 Hz AdaptiveSync Display.

Visual storytelling

Two short films were screened simultaneously with the much-awaited Philippine launch of the latest Mi Series, to highlight the capabilities of the phones and to inspire aspiring artists to create their own visual stories.

Che Tagyamon and Glenn Barit were impressed with the quality of the images produced by the latest Xiaomi phones. Their short film, titled Maski Papano chronicled the journey of a discarded face mask, who traipsed through the city and found companionship in another mask. Their stop-motion images using the Mi 10T Pro’s camera have captured the quieter pace of the metropolis, offering an immersive experience for those who have not left their homes in the past months. “We love how easy it is to shoot and edit the film with a phone camera that made powerful features portable,” says Tagyamon. “It was easier and safer for us to go around the city and shoot on location without having to use heavier equipment, and we even only had to charge it once during the shoot.”

For his short film titled “Sunshine, Sunshine”, Sonny Calvento color-graded his character to reflect her personality and perspective. Sunshine, the lead character eventual transformation towards self-love. The story tackles the feeling of loss and isolation especially during the lockdown, with a turning point catalysed by conversations with a stranger leading to Sunshine’s enlightenment. “Editing to achieve that desired effect around my characters was easy with the video that was produced because of Mi 10T Pro’s color profile. With the camera capturing the interiors in vivid detail, it was easy to be more creative and playful with my vision using the Mi 10T Pro.”

The 7P lens offers impressive light gathering that unlocks the full potential of the 108MP camera setup plus, it is combined with AI Pixel that offers comprehensive pixel optimization for more vibrant pictures. This is a pro-photo, pro-video phone that allows the users to get creative with no boundaries –even under lockdown.”

The Mi 10T and Mi 10T Pro that are equipped with the LOG Mode that adds depth and color to editing and the RAW mode that helps you to create the perfect shot even under the toughest lighting conditions.

Empowering creators

The Mi 10T and Mi 10T Pro are fitting flagship products to launch at the company’s 10th anniversary. Ava Castillo, Head of Marketing of Philippines, Xiaomi, says that its advanced features offer its users the power to create their own content by capturing their ideas and bringing them to life. “We are very proud to be a supporter of the local indie creators, who are bringing a whole new dimension on art and how we see the world around us through their visual stories.”

MANILA, OCTOBER 22, 2020 - Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, launches its annual 11.11 - 12.12 Big Christmas Sale. It comes off the back of its successful 9.9 and 10.10 shopping events, reflecting the continued growth of e-commerce in the region. This 11.11 - 12.12, Shopee further commits to uplifting communities, generating new opportunities for sellers and brands, and designing stronger shared experiences for shoppers, all as part of its broader vision to make e-commerce for everyone.

This will occur in each of Shopee’s Southeast Asian markets, supported by trusted social organizations, top celebrities, and the biggest brands in Southeast Asia. The charity drive aims to raise awareness and donations for underprivileged children in the region. Shopee believes that all individuals, particularly the youth, should have the opportunity to succeed in the future digital economy.

In the Philippines, Shopee launches Shopee Bayanihan: Pamaskong Pambata with 11 of the most trusted foundations in the country, including Mano Amiga Philippines; World Vision Philippines; Young Focus for Education and Development Foundation, Inc.; Fundlife International, Inc.; GMA Kapuso Foundation, Inc.; Save the Children Philippines; Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Philippines, Inc.; Project Pearls, Inc.; Project Smile Philippines; Kythe Foundation, Inc.; and PGH Medical Foundation, Inc. Participating brands will donate a percentage of their sales to their foundation of choice.

2. Creating opportunities for all businesses
Unlocking e-commerce for sellers, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and brands

The growth of e-commerce in Southeast Asia and Taiwan has created new opportunities for sellers, SMEs, and brands. This trend is reflected in Shopee, as the number of sellers on the platform increased by 60% year-on-year.

This has created greater diversity in the region’s e-commerce landscape, with aspiring and experienced sellers alike seeking to grow their businesses online. This means that there is no one-size-fits-all approach, as sellers face unique challenges at different stages of their digital journey. Shopee has widened its spectrum of support measures to help all sellers succeed, regardless of experience and size:

Helping new and existing sellers cope with a global pandemic: Over 300,000 sellers, SMEs, and entrepreneurs in the region signed up for Shopee’s Seller Support Package within the first month of launch in April. New sellers also enjoyed 6x sales growth during Shopee’s 9.9 Super Shopping Day in September.
Upgrading Shopee University to empower diverse groups of local sellers: Shopee has enhanced its Shopee University program, including digitalizing the curriculum and widening its online Seller Education Hub so that all sellers can level up their e-commerce skills. Recently, Shopee also partnered with Visa, USAID, Globe myBusiness, and the Quezon City local government unit to equip sellers with the financial, marketing, and e-commerce knowledge needed to succeed in the digital economy.
Seller Masterclasses drive sellers to adopt new tools, adapt to new trends: In the Philippines, Shopee introduced its Seller Masterclass to help sellers leverage the benefits of livestreaming better. Popular streamers such as ClosetbyNikka2600, MyOutfitGallery, and cilebritee_shop shared exclusive tips for reaching more customers on Shopee Live.Shopee also helped local and international brands connect and engage with the region’s digital-first shoppers. In 2020, Shopee co-created 600 Super Brand Days with top companies such as Disney, Samsung, and L’Oreal, who looked forward to growing their online presence and sales. The recent 10.10 Brands Festival also generated strong traction for brand partners, as traffic on Shopee Mall surged 2.5x the daily average.

3. Creating shared experiences
Forging communities, reinventing social shopping on Shopee

Shopee will continue to connect, inform, and inspire consumers across the region. Users can explore similar interests and discover better deals through Shopee’s shopping communities, while enjoying a more social shopping experience with Shopee’s enhanced in-app features.

Shopee connects like-minded consumers and caters to their online needs through communities such as Shopee’s Mom’s Club. Its over 1.5 million members enjoy one-stop access to top global brands for baby products, including Pampers, Enfa, and Nestle, as well as exclusive parenting content from mothers and experts.

For the new generation of digital luxury consumers, Shopee recently launched Shopee Premium, an exclusive destination offering direct access to authentic premium products, while allowing consumers to understand the brands more.

Shopee also enhanced its collection of popular in-app features to make online shopping even more social, fun, and rewarding:

Enhanced social features: Shopee has upgraded its iconic in-app features to better connect sellers, brands, and users during the 11.11 - 12.12 Big Christmas Sale. New auction and polling features on Shopee Live will make the live shopping experience even more engaging. Shopee Feed has also been upgraded with live video “Stories” for real-time engagement between users.Yu closed, “Shopee 11.11 Big Sale is our way of transforming a global phenomenon into one that truly belongs to our region. LRMC boosts LRT-1 capacity, assures safety of passengers

In photo: LRMC study on the effectiveness of minimum PPEs via Visualization Experiment

20 October 2020, MANILA, Philippines, —Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), the private operator and maintenance provider of LRT-1, assures the safety of passengers as it increases capacity of trains in support of economic recovery.

Following the Department of Transportation (DOTr)’s directive to gradually increase the maximum passenger capacity of trains and adhere to OPLAN AIR (ADD PUVs, routes, trains, INCREASE speed, capacity, REDUCE travel time, headway), LRMC will adjust passenger loading capacity to 30% gradually up to 50% later on. Passenger control will be implemented using the PLPP (passenger limit per platform) strategy, wherein a defined number of passengers are allowed to board per station.

With the increase in loading capacity, Filipino commuters may continue to be assured of safety inside LRT-1 trains. Based on recent international studies conducted, there is not a high risk of infection for COVID-19 in public transportation. According to Spanish health experts from the Spain’s National Research Council (CSIC) and Spanish Epidemiological Association, the risk of contagion on buses and trains is low due to the safety measures such as the use of face masks, as well as improved ventilation systems. Researchers from Imperial College London have been commissioned by the Transport for London to carry out ongoing testing for COVID across the Tube and bus network, and found no evidence of coronavirus. Countries such as Japan and France which are highly dependent on transit also did not trace back any infection clusters to public transport.

As part of its commitment to safety, LRMC’s Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality (HSEQ) Department is also conducting its own study on the safety protocols for its LRT-1 trains. According to LRMC HSEQ OIC, Dr. Louernie de Sales, “The LRMC study performed the dispersion experiment using Glo Germ® Mist to simulate sneezing and coughing. Glo Germ is commonly used to simulate bacteria of 0.5micron size. This study is limited only to the measurement of respiratory droplet dispersion, and the airborne transmission of COVID-19 was not taken into consideration yet. An experiment using SARS-CoV-2 or similar specimen was not carried out for the safety of the researchers and the participants. The study is currently undergoing peer review by partners from the University of the Philippines, who are also helping us work on this further.”

LRMC will publish its study once peer reviews are done. The study aims to support the safety in trains systems studied from abroad in the local setting.

LRMC emphasizes the importance of wearing face masks and face shields—on top of its other existing measures. This is also aligned with the 7 Commandments of public health measures proposed by a panel of medical experts led by former Department of Health Secs. Dr. Manuel Dayrit and Dra. Esperanza Cabral : 1) Wear face masks and face shields; 2) No talking and making telephone calls; 3) No eating; 4) Keep PUVs well- ventilated; 5) Conduct of frequent disinfection; 6) No passengers with COVID-19 symptoms are to be allowed inside the public transportation; and 7) Observe appropriate physical distancing.

“Rail Public Transportation is an enabler of our consumer driven economy. Our mission remains to provide safe transportation, and we achieve this using best in class safety protocols. In addition, we study the passenger behavior and target disinfection on the places most in contact of the passengers. These are measured by our team weekly, and adjustments are made to the priority areas for cleaning. I can assure our commuters that the LRT-1 system is safe,” said LRMC President and CEO Juan F. Alfonso.

LRMC study on the effectiveness of minimum PPEs via Visualization Experiment

Since it resumed operations during the GCQ period, LRMC has implemented above-minimum health and safety measures to ensure passenger and employee safety such as complying with the government’s directive of “No Face Mask, No Face Shield, No Entry” policy. Other measures also include diligent temperature checks with Forward Looking Infrared thermal scanners in six (6) major LRT-1 stations; Proper Ventilation is assured with fresh air exchanged every three minutes and filtered in the ACU system. Other measures are the installation of disinfection mats, impermeable plastic barriers on train seats, regular chemical disinfection complemented by UV C disinfection of all trains and stations; contactless transactions; and strict crowd control. LRMC was the first to implement the “no-talking and no answering phone calls” policy inside the trains. It has also pioneered the use of digital and mobile technology via its ikotMNL mobile app for information dissemination, convenient trip planning, and contact tracing of passengers.

For more updates and info on the LRT-1, follow LRMC on Facebook at, Twitter at @officialLRT1, or download the ikotMNL mobile app for free on Google Play and App Store.

7 useful tips for Overseas Filipinos and their families in these trying times

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the lives of most Overseas Filipinos (OFs) in different parts of the world. For some, there were salary cuts, temporary suspension of deployment contracts, or even repatriation. Naturally, many OFs are worried about health and safety, job security, finances, and the welfare of their families.

To help them cope with their new economic realities, Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and BPI-Philam offer seven simple tips:

  • Pause. While everything seems to be on pause, take some time to assess and check on your goals. Ask yourself the following questions: “Am I already close to reaching my goals?” “What else can I do to reach my goals faster?” When you’re reminded of your life goals, you’ll be more encouraged to get back on track.

  • Identify. Now that you have assessed your targets. It’s time to determine your priorities. We have to make the most out of the situation brought about by the pandemic. What are the most important things for you now? What are you planning to do about them? When you start to figure these out, it will be easier for you to think of your next steps.

  • Trust. Look for trusted partners who will help you in your “rebuilding journey.” Find yourself trusted advisors or mentors who will guide you in the process. They can be your family, friends, authorities, and the government. You can also consider seeking advice from your bank partners, when it comes to your financial concerns.

  • Secure. Protect your most valuable assets. The pandemic made us realize the things we take for granted. Take care of your family’s health and well-being, secure your investments and savings.

  • Time. The pandemic has caught us unprepared, and made us realize the importance of spending time with people who matter to us. While we’re advised to stay indoors, use this time to create meaningful memories with your families and loved ones.

  • Opportunity. Community quarantines and lockdowns presented occasions for us to learn new things. While we’re staying at home, feel free to explore new hobbies, things to learn, and nurture your skills. These can keep you occupied and productive, and you may earn additional income, too.

  • Prepare. Prepare yourself physically and mentally. Once you set your mind with the changes you have to embrace, you’ll be ready to face the “new normal”.

What’s happening right now is temporary, we still have a finish line to reach,” said Ms. Lamasuta, BPI Head of Retail Segments. “In order to do so, we must learn to nurture our finances, goals, relationships, and our health. We hope to assist our overseas

Filipinos by giving them sound advice so that they can get back to the race and finish strong.”

Amid the pandemic, BPI, through its partnership with BPI-Philam, continue to give support and assistance through trusted advice and accessible solutions to help OFs and their families live healthier, longer, and better lives.

Marian shopped for ingredients for WalterMart Supermarket’s P2,000 Salu-Salo Challenge using the Grocery Delivery (GD) app.

As a Family, Food, and Fun Place, WalterMart Supermarket recently launched its 10.10 Double Deals, part of which was the P2000 Salu-Salo Challenge with Marian Rivera which was recently conducted live on Facebook.

The challenge was an offshoot of a letter whose sender asked Marian for her tips on how to budget/save P2k for a group meal of 10. For this, Marian navigated the WalterMart Supermarket’s Grocery Delivery (GD) app, which has a list of meal suggestions where customers can just click the designated recipe and all the ingredients needed on that recipe will go directly to her cart. The Grocery Delivery app also has a capability where customers can choose the quantity (kg) needed for all the fresh products.

With a P2k budget, Marian was able to make four of her family’s favorite recipes: spaghetti, menudo, barbecue and lumpiang shanghai. With her extra money, she was also able to buy some snacks through the GD app, Promo Tab.

How did she do it? Here are Marian shares some tips on how to budget/save P2k for a group meal of 10 people with a little help from the WalterMart Supermarket delivery service:

Marian is happy that WalterMart Delivery provides a safe shopping experience that is easy, simple, fast and convenient.

1. Plan your budget well. Marian identified the budget she would need budget for meals, drinks, and for other things needed for a salo-salo. With that, she made a list.

“WalterMart helps you budget easily because they have suggested meal recipes that will help you forecast how much would you need for a certain meal,” she says. “Everday Savings kasi sa WalterMart”

2. Stick to your budget. Marian suggests that we be practical when buying ingredients. “Look for alternatives that of the same quality but with better value,” she shares. “You don’t need expensive ingredients just to cook for your most well loved recipes. We can explore other options.”

She adds that she also doesn’t believe in quality over quantity. “Why do you have to choose between the two?” she asks. The best is to have” quantity but of course without compromising quality.”

And she is happy that WalterMart supermarket has many available options of good quality products that can fit into one’s budget. “Kumpleto dito eh,” she says

3. Schedule your grocery shopping. For Marian, the earlier you shop in the day, the better. It’s better to avoid the rush and crowds, especially now since safety is our priority.

For her salu-salo ingredients, Marian availed of WalterMart supermarket’s delivery service, which she found to be quick and efficient. “You order online and the ingredients will be delivered to your doorstep,” she says. “Kaya ok na ok ang service.”

4. Look for promos. With most of us budget conscious these days, Marian suggests that we regularly check promos being offered.

She was surprised that with WalterMart’s daily promos, she had extra money left for her guilty pleasures like snacks or things for her kids. “Hindi ka lang basta nakasave, masayang masaya ka pa kasi nga, you get more than what you budget for,” she enthuses. “In the end, happy ang shopping mo!”

Marian was able to make four family favorite recipes:  spaghetti, menudo, barbecue, and lumpiang shanghai for P2,00 for a group of 10 during the challenge.

One promo she is looking forward to is WalterMart’s P99 Anniversaya Deals on October 15 to 18, where one can enjoy great bundled packs of P99, P199 and P299.
