Seven global advocates, including Malaysian marine biologist Alif Kazman representing Southeast Asia, complete the 10-day coral reef restoration program at the SHEBA® Hope Reef in Indonesia’s Spermonde Archipelago

Makassar, 28 August 2023 – SHEBA®, a Mars, Incorporated pet food brand, has successfully completed the SHEBA® Hope Advocate Program, bringing together two Indonesian hosts and five global advocates from the SHEBA® Hope Grows Collective, UK, Germany, USA and Southeast Asia to work on the world’s largest global reef restoration program. The Southeast Asia representative was Alif Kazman, a marine biologist from Malaysia.

Alif and six other advocates concluded their 10-day adventure at the SHEBA® Hope Reef located in Bontosua, an island in the Spermonde Archipelago off the coast of Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. They have had the opportunity to work with the local community, receive practical restoration training and restore an area of coral reef using Reef Stars, the ‘hero’ of the Mars Assisted Reef Restoration System.

“As a young scientist, it was an honor for me to be selected as a SHEBA® Hope Advocate to represent Southeast Asia and to have the opportunity to learn more about the unique research program that supports reef restoration. It was eye-opening to see the scale of the SHEBA® Hope Reef and its impact on the local community, researchers and field officers who work together. The experience was once-in-a-lifetime for me, and I am eager to impart knowledge about the importance of marine conservation to my peers and the younger generation,” said Alif.

The SHEBA® Hope Advocate Program is part of a global reef restoration movement entitled SHEBA® Hope Grows. The program began with the creation of a 46x14m structure spelling the letters H-O-P-E in Bontosua in 2019, using restored coral. What was once a barren and lifeless underwater landscape, is now a thriving coral reef ecosystem with coral growth increasing from 2% to 70%, fish populations increasing by 260% as well as a 64% rise in the number of fish species. By 2029, SHEBA® aim to restore more than 185,000 square meters of coral reefs — roughly the size of 148 Olympic swimming pools — at key sites around the world.

“We are thrilled to offer this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the seven advocates to take part in the world’s largest coral reef restoration program first-hand. The SHEBA® brand is a proud part of the Mars family – driven by our purpose to create a better world for pets. It's more than simply a cat food company; their global movement Hope Grows is inspiring change. It is now more important than ever to take further action to protect the environment, our climate, and local communities. Our program demonstrates how Hope can flourish even in the most trying situations by sharing knowledge and working together to protect and restore critically threatened ecosystems,” stated Dr. Susan Wan, General Manager, Mars Petcare Indonesia.

“The SHEBA® Hope Advocate Program has received immeasurably positive response from around the globe. With over 250 applications from the US, UK, Germany, and Southeast Asia, including more than 50 applications from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines, we are thrilled with the final seven advocates who were selected based on their passion for ocean conservation. The impact of the work that the Advocates are doing is critical in preserving and restoring the beauty of our ocean and ensuring our future has fish. The program is a collective of long-lasting and meaningful partnerships that are expanding impact far beyond the coral reefs SHEBA® are directly restoring – including on the local communities, tourism and education in Indonesia” said Philippa Mansell, Indonesia Marine Program Lead, Mars Sustainable Solutions.

In conjunction with the SHEBA® Hope Advocate program, the SHEBA® brand is also collaborating with selected retailers in Philippines to collect donations which will be used to create Reef Stars to be planted in the iconic SHEBA® Hope Reef in Bontosua Island, Makassar, Sulawesi Indonesia. For every purchase of any SHEBA® product in Lazada Philippines (Pedigree and Whiskas Flagship Store), 5% of the purchase value will be donated to the coral reef restoration in the SHEBA® Hope Reef. For more information and terms and conditions, please visit https://www.sheba.com.ph/sustainability.

SHEBA®’s sustainability efforts are supported by its parent company Mars, Incorporated, and its efforts to protect our planet. Mars’ Sustainable in a Generation Plan illustrates the Mars mission to build the world we want tomorrow, today.

Sun Life Chief Client Experience & Marketing Officer Carla Gonzalez-Chong, sixth from left, led the opening of the Sun Life 3x3 Charity Challenge which was graced by celebrities

Various communities in the Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam will soon get to enjoy revitalized basketball courts and basketball training programs as Sun Life donates PHP 40 million to promote healthier lives among marginalized youth across Asia.

The philanthropic program will be mounted in partnership with Beyond Sport, a global sport-for- social-change foundation. This is in answer to the 2022 Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance report sponsored by Sun Life, which showed high levels of physical inactivity and sedentary behavior among children and adolescents across Asia, contributing to high rates of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, mental health challenges and other damaging health outcomes. The report further showed, that in terms of overall physical activity, Hong Kong and Malaysia attained a grade of D, while Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam received an F, which means fewer than 20% of children ages 6 to 17 achieve an average of at least 60 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous physical activity across the week.

Sun Life Chief Client Experience & Marketing Officer Carla Gonzalez-Chong

“Promoting movement is an important aspect of Sun Life’s health and wellness advocacy. We constantly explore fun and engaging ways to promote it among Filipinos, especially the youth,” said Sun Life Chief Client Experience and Marketing Officer Carla Gonzalez-Chong. “For this particular initiative, we took inspiration in our country’s love for basketball so we can encourage everyone to make physical activity a part of their lifestyle.”

For his part, Beyond Sport Executive Director Fred Turner highlighted how young people globally face barriers to accessing sport and all the advantages that come with it. “Often, that barrier is as simple as having a safe space to move and play,” he said. “We are proud to partner with Sun Life to improve physical and mental wellbeing outcomes for marginalized youth. We hope this program, built with community and sustainability in mind, will help them develop life-long habits that will allow them to thrive."

#MovementMatters gains momentum

The campaign earlier kicked off with a 3x3 charity event simultaneously held in Manila and Jakarta, Indonesia from August 18 to 20.

The Manila leg, dubbed “Sun Life 3x3 Charity Challenge,” was held at SM Megamall with a total of 349 participants led by various celebrities and basketball influencers such as Gab Banal, Ael Banal, Brent Javier, Jollo Go, Andre Felix, Thor Gomez, Brent Paraiso, John Custodio, Axel Torres, Pat Sugui, Kirst Viray, Ralph Molina Martin Reyes, Miguel Aytona, Hendrix Jim, and Martin Javier.

Sun Life donated PHP 4,000 for every participant in both Manila and Jakarta, and for every like, share, comment, and post on social media with the hashtag #MovementMatters, paving the way for a total donation of PHP 40 million.

The event also aligns with the participation of Team Canada and its top players in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup happening in Manila. Sun Life is the Official Health & Wellness Partner of Canada Basketball.

“We’re thrilled about the momentum we’ve set for the #MovementMatters campaign and look forward to everyone’s continued support,” Gonzalez-Chong said. “With our concerted efforts, we can certainly help more people live healthier lives.”

Medical societies and patient-leaders unite for respiratory disease awareness campaign.

(From L-R) Ms. Jing Castañeda, host, broadcaster and journalist, Dr. JB Pimentel, Medical Advisor, BIPHI, Dr. Mae Campomanes, Chair on ILD Council, PCCP, Clare Burrows, General Manager and Head of Human Pharma, BIPHI, Marimel S. Lamsin, Treasurer, PAPO, and Dr. Janeth Samson, VP, PCCP.

This August, in celebration of National Lung Month, frontrunners in the Philippine healthcare industry coalesce to increase public education on various lung diseases. The event “Lungs Matter: Raising Awareness for Respiratory Wellness” was put up by the Philippine Alliance of Patient Organizations, Psoriasis Philippines, Philippine Society for Orphan Disorders, Scleroderma Awareness Philippines, and Philippine College of Chest Physicians, supported by pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim (Philippines), Inc.

Held at The Bayleaf Hotel in Intramuros, Manila, the event was attended by esteemed healthcare experts who shared fruitful insights on popular and lesser-known respiratory diseases, and the basics of lung care.

“This National Lung Month is a good opportunity for us to focus the public’s attention on respiratory wellness, spread more awareness on the different kinds of lung disease, and call on a collective movement to support healthier air,” said Dr. Mae Campomanes, Chair for the Council on Occupational and Interstitial Lung Diseases, PCCP.

The “Lungs Matter: Raising Awareness for Respiratory Wellness” event took guests on various forum talks, pocket activities, and wellness exercises, such as Breathwork Practices and Shibashi — an 18-posture exercise that coordinates movement with breathing and concentration. It was then followed by a meditational walk in the historic Arroceros Forest Park. Known as "Manila's last lung", the Arroceros Forest Park was a catalyst for better and healthier environment in the aim of fostering lung health. The walk was done in solidarity of all partners to focus the public’s attention on respiratory wellness and to encourage participants to make a personal pledge to supporting lung health.

Leading the fight against lung diseases

In 2022, the Department of Health (DOH) reported 300,000 cases of acute respiratory infection over the course of six months. Among the most common lung diseases known to Filipinos are asthma, a disease of the airways in the lungs caused by inflammation; pneumonia, which happens when fluids build up in the lungs; tuberculosis (TB), a contagious disease caused by germs; and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), an inflammation that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. Other rare lung diseases that are equally important, but which are difficult to diagnose are interstitial lung disease (ILD), which is a group of disorders that cause progressive scarring of lung tissue.

“There’s a wide range of topics for us to touch on regarding respiratory wellness. We at Boehringer Ingelheim, are committed to supporting our health organizations and medical societies to further increase disease education. We want to help push prevention and early diagnosis at the forefront so we can safeguard the health of many Filipinos,” said Dr. Greta Cortez, Head of Medicine for Boehringer Ingelheim (Philippines), Inc.

Through the “Lungs Matter: Raising Awareness for Respiratory Wellness” event, advocates champion the patients’ quality of life by putting importance on prevention and early detection. This educational discussion, in honor of National Lung Month, aims to inform the public about the predispositions and risks associated with common to life-threatening respiratory diseases.

Coastal land reclamation is increasing and will continue to grow and be a popular urban strategy in places that experience urban growth.

This is according to a study, “Mapping 21st Century Global Coastal Land Reclamation,” that analyzed landsat satellite images from 2000 to 2020 to quantify spatial extent, scale, and land use of urban coastal reclamation of 135 cities globally with populations exceeding one million. Key findings indicate that 78% of these cities have turned to reclamation to create additional land, resulting in 253,000 hectares of new land, an area equivalent to Luxembourg.

Land reclamation is the process of creating new land from the sea. It’s often used in places with scarcity of land and high population density for many purposes. From Western Europe and West Africa to the Middle East, East Asia, and Southeast Asia, these countries’ cities reclaim lands for port extension, residential/commercial, and industrial purposes aimed at creating tourist and green spaces. Key drivers like global trade and rapid urbanization are already ubiquitous, so for the next step, these cities desire prestigious place-making efforts and enhanced international reputation.

“Coastal land reclamation is a forward-looking approach to urban development,” says Architect Ian Fulgar, the principal architect of Fulgar Architects. It allows cities to preserve valuable ecosystems and resources from urban sprawl by expanding spaces without encroaching on existing natural land. More importantly for architects, urban planners, and modern city dwellers, it presents an opportunity to have purpose-built urban environments specifically designed to meet their needs.

“Architects and urban planners can design sustainable and efficient infrastructure with a blank canvas, incorporating the latest technologies and best practices in urban planning. This approach can lead to more resilient and adaptive cities capable of mitigating the effects of climate change and other environmental challenges,” adds Architect Fulgar.

Cities that lead coastal land reclamation

Singapore, Dubai, and Hong Kong, says Architect Fulgar, are some of the world’s most notable cities with impressive urban reclamation projects. “Not only have they transformed their respective landscapes but also captured global attention,” he says.

Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay are testaments to the city-state’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. The former is a luxury integrated resort famed for transforming Singapore’s coastline and city skyline, whereas the latter is a spectacularly unique horticultural destination that combines art, science, and nature. These reclaimed land developments further boost the country’s international reputation and real estate value around the area.

For some parts of the United Arab Emirates, coastal land reclamation has significantly changed its geography. Dubai, which has completely transformed into an ultramodern city, features ambitious projects now known as some of the most recognizable developments in the world like Palm Jumeirah and The World. “They have reshaped the coastline and established the city as a leader in innovative development, significantly elevating Dubai’s real estate value and worldwide interest,” says Architect Fulgar.

Palm Jumeirah is an awe-inspiring artificial archipelago shaped like a palm tree when viewed from above. It houses some of Dubai’s luxury hotels, residences, and entertainment venues. Likewise, The World is a groundbreaking project composed of small artificial islands in the shape of a world map.

Lastly, Hong Kong’s commitment to preserved art, culture, and ongoing sustainable urban development is exemplified by its West Kowloon Cultural District. It is a 40-hectare reclaimed site along Victoria Harbour’s waterfront designated as the city’s vibrant cultural quarter where the local arts scene can interact, develop, and collaborate throughout its sustainability principles.

Architect Fulgar, who firmly believes in creating spaces that foster belonging and unity, highlights that Singapore, Dubai, and Hong Kong share common denominators in their successful urban reclamation projects. These are innovative design and planning, focus on sustainability and commitment to cultural and societal development, and the subsequent increase in real estate value.

“These projects have created iconic and visually striking landscapes by pushing the boundaries of engineering and urban design. Sustainability is often at the forefront, integrating practices and technologies that minimize environmental impact and enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors,” says Architect Fulgar on these cities’ commitment to sustainability atop function and aesthetics.

Best practices of coastal land reclamation

Despite recognition of world-class reclamation projects, one of their primary challenges is facing criticism and potential issues over sustainability concerns. Architect Fulgar shares that the solution is through the responsibility of vital stakeholders to adopt a collaborative approach and adaptive strategies in implementing best practices, such as prioritizing sustainability and disaster resilience goals in waterfront developments.

“The future of city development, especially in coastal areas, rests with stakeholders prioritizing sustainability and disaster resilience. By adopting a comprehensive, collaborative, and adaptable strategy, they can transform the design, construction, and management of waterfront development – ultimately creating more sustainable, resilient, and prospering urban environments that benefit both people and the environment,” adds Architect Fulgar.

Moreover, Architect Fulgar puts emphasis on a well-planned project that begins with the developers’ thorough research and analysis of the selected area about potential environmental impacts, disaster risks, and local community needs. Architects and engineers need to incorporate sustainable design principles and green and blue spaces to reduce the development's environmental footprint.

“Trends and insights on global reclamation illustrate the potential of reclamation projects in addressing various urban development, environmental conservation, and community well-being needs – leading to more sustainable and resilient urban planning worldwide. By adopting these lessons and focusing on sustainable growth, the Philippines can capitalize on its potential and carve a path to a brighter future.”

In line with the SM Green Movement, the SM group, through SM Foundation, recently established a rainwater harvesting system at the Brgy. Irawan Birthing Facility in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. The initiative aims to strengthen their goal of preserving the environment and ensuring the health and wellness of future generations.

To enhance water conservation and management in the facility, the system collects rainwater from the roof and gutter, passing it through vinyl-coated mesh filters to help ensure water quality. With an 800-liter storage capacity, the harvested water serves the facility’s non-potable needs like watering plants, cleaning, and toilet flushing.

The rainwater harvesting facility also operates without electricity and features labeled faucets for intuitive recycled water use.

Midwife Narcisa Jagmis, who leads the said birthing facility, said that the facility will help them reduce their reliance on the city’s water supply systems.

The guest speakers kicked off the discussion by sharing about the pivotal role of Wetland Centers as a tool for Communication, Capacity Building, Education, Participation, and Awareness (CEPA) in wetland conservation efforts.

Arch. Ulep, meanwhile, engaged the audience by introducing the concept of nature-based architecture, highlighting the importance of prioritizing sustainability and harmony in design by creating structures that seamlessly integrate with the natural environment.

Meanwhile, Arch. Aaron Lecciones, SCPW Special Projects Officer, made a detailed visual presentation on the Las Piñas-Parañaque Wetland Park (LPPWP) Design Team's experience. He highlighted the challenges and triumphs of designing a wetland park, serving as a source of inspiration for aspiring designers and architects.

Esteemed partners, including Ms. Rida Reyes Castillo of SM Prime, Dr. Arvin Diesmos of the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity, Mr. Laudemir Salac of DENR-Region 3, and Arch. Gleo Raymundo of UAPSA graced the event to show their full support for this endeavor.

"It is an honor and privilege on the part of SM to partner with the SCPW and UAPSA in realizing its common goal of protecting ecosystems, particularly wetlands, by inspiring the youth to engage and take action on the socio-civic and economic issues in their communities by finding workable solutions towards building a sustainable future," SM Prime AVP and Head of Marketing, PR, and Communications Rida Reyes Castillo said.

Employees and volunteers from SM Malls in Grand Central, Sangandaan, and Valenzuela trooped to public schools in Camanava area to work together for the Brigada Eskwela 2023.

Various activities ranging from carpentry work, paint jobs, repairs, replacements, and greening the school surroundings were assigned to volunteers to ensure school grounds are clean, safe, and conducive for learning.

In Caloocan City, SM City Grand Central and SM Center Sangandaan volunteers gave classrooms a brand new look by cleaning, repairing chairs and desks, and painting walls. The rundown rooms of Maria Clara National High School in Caloocan were masterly restored and given a make-over. Beneficiaries also received cleaning materials and supplies for repairs and painting.

SM City Valenzuela, on the other hand, brought back vibrancy into the nearby Caruhatan West Elementary School. The building and classrooms got a touch up in the form of fresh wall paint, dust-free chairs and tables, repaired jalousie windows, and sanitized comfort rooms.

SM's commitment to education and progress goes beyond this annual initiative. The company has also been engaged in various educational projects and partnerships, including scholarship programs, classroom donations, and infrastructure support for schools in need, as well as empowering students and new graduates by connecting them to meaningful job opportunities.

Recently, SM City Valenzuela organized the first overseas job fair in the NCR. The job fair generated over 3,000 job listings from at least 10 participating global companies and employers. The Overseas Mega Job Fair in SM City Valenzuela pulled in a thick and large crowd of jobseekers, including fresh graduates.

Brigada Eskwela is an annual volunteerism activity led by SM's Human Resources Department in partnership with SM Cares and the mall's Customer Relations Service Department. Aligned with SM’s mission to be a catalyst for positive change, the initiative seeks to assist communities in creating a better learning environment for students. It also hopes to encourage SM employees to participate in civic activities.
