SM City Calamba wins in the Buhayani Festival

Rizal sa Espana’ float scores top prize in the Grand Float Competition

SM City Calamba designed and created an impressive float that won the top prize at the recently concluded Buhayani Festival Grand Float Competition held at Rizal Shrine in Calamba, Laguna.

We take pride in the Filipino culture as we show our support by promoting and joining fun, local celebrations, such as the Buhayani Festival. This recent win definitely makes us even more proud to be part of the community,” said Engr. John Jason Terrenal, senior assistant vice president for South Luzon Mall Operations.

SM Calamba’s ‘Rizal sa España’ float was inspired by the life of Rizal in Spain. The façade showed a replica of Universidad Central de Madrid where Rizal studied medicine to fulfill his dream of becoming a doctor. Behind it was a library which emphasized Rizal’s exemplary performance and traits as a student. The dockyard where Rizal began his journey in Madrid was also included in the float, as well as the paper and pen which strongly symbolizes his wisdom and his great contribution in attaining the country’s sovereignty.

Since 2014, SM City Calamba has been taking part in the Buhayani Festival, which has gained recognition and support from the local community – from schools, government agencies, private establishments and local organizations. The Buhayani Festival is Calamba City’s way to celebrate the life of its homegrown hero and the National Hero of the Philippines, Gat. Jose Rizal. “Buhayani” is derived from two Filipino words, “buhay” (life) and “bayani” (hero).

Go on an LRT-1 food trip this Saturday with these Manila eats

MANILA, July 16, 2019 – Manila is known for many things, not least of which is its rich and delicious food. That means you don’t have to go very far to go on a memorable food trip—you could go on one right now in your own home base!

All it takes are a few quick trips up and down the city’s iconic LRT-1 line. Make it a fun and productive Saturday to remember and get yourself full and satisfied with this convenient itinerary:

Lunch at Baclaran
The southern end of the line at Baclaran station is home to various choices, largely thanks to its famous Baclaran market. Start your Manila food trip with lunch at any of the endless options, such as the Pista Food Hall at Redemptorist Road with a whole host of Filipino cuisine and delightful regional flavors by its different concessionaires, or the Yokocho Food Court if you’re fixing to have some mouthwatering and affordable Japanese food. With all the possibilities in Baclaran, make sure you’ve still got room for the other stops!

Photos from Pista Food Hall Facebook page

Merienda at Carriedo
If you want to experience more diverse flavors in Manila, make your way over to Chinatown in Binondo via Carriedo station. There, you’ll find the legendary Quik Snack restaurant on Carvajal Street, home to traditional Filipino-Chinese fare with a few more international dishes also in the menu. You might find the restaurant packed to the brim with other excited diners, but don’t be discouraged—the food is definitely worth the wait. You came all the way here for the good stuff, didn’t you?

Railway Jam at the Doroteo Jose station
Head one stop further up the LRT-1 line and discover a cultural gem outside of food—music! From 4PM-6PM, the Doroteo Jose train station becomes a mini-concert hub for commuters as up-and-coming local musicians perform through busking sessions, also known as Railway Jam. Initiated by Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) and ikotMNL, in partnership with Organisasyon ng mga Pilipinong Mang-Aawit (OPM), Railway Jam is showcased from Thursdays to Saturdays until August 2019 at the Doroteo Jose, Monumento, and Baclaran stations for commuters to enjoy pure musical talent and witness the rise of the next potential OPM star.

Dinner at Abad Santos
Last, but certainly never the least is the Filipino delicacy nobody passes up—the immortal and ever-present lechon. Score some of the best lechon in the city by taking the train to Abad Santos station where you can find Mila’s Lechon. You can be sure that it’ll satisfy and serve as a delicious end to an enjoyable and unique Saturday.

The beautiful thing about Manila is that you can head to all these stops in one day, thanks to the convenience of the LRT-1 and ikotMNL! And since it’s already the rainy season, don’t forget to bring your umbrellas—you wouldn’t want to go on your food trip all soaking wet!

ikotMNL is a tourism campaign launched by the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) in 2018 to connect foreign and local travelers to Manila’s rich history, cultural heritage, and top food destinations by riding the LRT-1 to areas such as Intramuros, Binondo, Quiapo, and many more. Be ready on your next getaway with these five travel must-haves!

Planning for a trip takes more than just booking flights and reserving hotel accommodations. Every seasoned traveler knows that it is equally important to immediately research for suggested itineraries and make a list of things to bring for the duration of the vacation.

From making sure that all travel documents are ready, to choosing the right luggage to bring and knowing the appropriate clothes to pack, preparing for any kind of getaway may be nerve-racking. To make things easier the next time you’re going on an out-of-town trip or flying to another country, here’s a checklist of items you should not forget to pack in your bag:

  1. Reusable water bottle. Exploring a different city means that you will be walking around the streets and taking public commute for hours. One of your best travel companions to keep you energized and hydrated during your adventures is a cool bottle of water. While you can always buy from convenience stores, it is recommended to bring your handy tumbler which you can always refill anytime for free.

Complete your travel essentials with a World Traveler luggage and Hydro Flask water bottle when you get your own CEB GetGo Credit Card.

  1. Fully charged power bank. Almost everything needed to survive traveling is already in a smartphone such as maps, language translator, and currency calculator. So, imagine just how hard it would be if your phone’s battery drained. With a portable power bank in your bag, you can save yourself from emergencies by just plugging your gadget and charging it on the go.

  1. Complete health kit. Whether you’re traveling within the country or to a new destination, it can be difficult to get treatment when an injury or illness happens. That’s why it’s always better to be prepared with your own kit, complete with medicines and basic first aid supplies including bandages and alcohol so you can immediately tend to any kind of emergency or accident.

  1. Small travel bag. A luggage is needed to carry all your things to one destination; but when you’re already touring the city, you wouldn’t want to carry a big heavy bag. To truly enjoy and travel like a tourist, you should have an additional crossbody bag or purse which you can practically bring anywhere you go.
Apply for any of the CEB GetGo Credit Cards and get a World Traveler luggage and Hydro Flask water bottle to bring on your next vacation.

  1. Widely-accepted credit card. While it is great to be prepared with cash when traveling, having a credit card is much more convenient and hassle-free for purchases locally and even abroad. With a credit card, you are free to shop and spend for the most rewarding and memorable experiences. Some banks even offer travel credit cards with amazing rewards such as points to fly for free for every purchase transaction!

Cebu Pacific’s lifestyle rewards program, GetGo has its own fleet of credit cards - CEB GetGo Credit Card and CEB GetGo Platinum Card - that let members enjoy cashless transactions and online shopping convenience wherever they are, while earning points that can be redeemed to book a free Cebu Pacific flight! It has one of the best conversion rates in the market, with every P30 spend earning members 1 GetGo Point.

For those who don’t have their own CEB GetGo Credit Cards yet, GetGo and UnionBank is bringing its newest exciting promo for new cardholders. From now up to October 8, 2019, those who will apply for a CEB GetGo Credit Card will get a free cabin-sized World Traveler luggage and an 18-oz. wide mouth Hydro Flask vacuum-insulated stainless-steel water bottle upon spending P20,000 on the card within 65 days from approval date.

LBC empowers MSMEs with Php 80 Pasabog Promo for Cash on Pick-Up Transactions

Friday, July 12, 2019

As its way of empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises, LBC, the leading logistics service company in the Philippines, recently launched its Cash on Pick-up (COP) Php 80 Pasabog Promo. The increasing number of deliveries initiated by the flourishing eCommerce prompted LBC to offer a fixed rate of Php 80, which it will offer until Aug. 31, 2019.
LBC COP Php 80 Pasabog Promo is, so far, the courier service's most affordable offering to allow online sellers and buyers to do as many transactions as they can.
LBC has been the most reliable logistics company in the country and is synonymous with better service. People who want to assure that their parcels will arrive on time in its destination rely heavily on LBC's courier service. The rates have always been competitive, even the smallest businesses will be able to avail themselves of.
The flat rate of Php 80 is applicable to deliveries or shipments within the Philippines of up to 3 kilograms. Anything that exceeds the weight will have an additional fee, which is commensurate to the given fixed rate.
The LBC COP Php 80 flat-rate offer is applicable for the following LBC parcels and boxes: N-Pack Small, N-Pack Large, KB Mini, KB Slim, and KB Small. A minimum charge of Php 15 will be added as a valuation fee and may increase depending on the declared value of the shipment.
LBC continues to introduce innovations as its response to the changing business landscape in the country. Ecommerce has allowed individuals to operate businesses within the confines of their homes while buyers can purchase an item using the internet or through an app.
These developments not only gives MSMEs the opportunity to expand their livelihood but it also contributes to the economy.
LBC boasts 1,400 branches nationwide which also now serve as pick-up points especially in hard-to-reach areas where transportation is limited. With the introduction of "Kaliwaan System," buyers and sellers are assured of smooth and fast transactions. It eliminates the constant worry of whether the item was sent or received. This is one of the issues LBC's innovation is able to address.
LBC hopes to encourage more entrepreneurs to expand their business reach with COP Php 80 Pasabog Promo.
For more information, visit https://lbcexpress.com/80-pesos-pasabog or any LBC branch near you.

My journey in finding the right Lifetime partner

In this day and age, we can easily stay in contact with another. Building relationships is easier since we can communicate in an instant. However, meaningful relationships can be formed by giving personal time to one another. We give the utmost value to people who make us their priority. Each of us have our partner in life.

I can't imagine living my life without my life partner.

I remember when my dad was diagnosed with diabetes. We were scared the we might lose him when he was hospitalized but my mom was by his side through ups and downs. One thing that I learned about my parents' partnership is that you should value what you spend your time on.

Piolo Pascual, Inigo Pascual, Enchong Dee, Matteo Guldicelli, and Charo Santos Concio are about to reveal their lifetime partners in videos wherein they collaborated with Sunlife Financial. Their lifetime partners who made their lives brighter because they believed in them, supported them, and inspired them. It was dubbed ‘Kaakbay: Stories of Lifetime Partnerships.”

Enchong shared his sentiments about the video stating "'It was a very emotional experience developing my video with Sun Life,” He also added “When i saw the finished product, i couldn’t help but cry." His coach was instrumental to his success in sports and showbiz and as such, is someone he will never forget. Matteo confessed

Enchong Dee, one of the ambassadors confessed "'It was a very emotional experience developing my video with Sun Life,” He also added “When i saw the finished product, i couldn’t help but cry." His coach was instrumental to his success in sports and showbiz and as such, is someone he will never forget.

Matteo on the other hand shared his relationship with his grandfather. He appreciated the video and can't help but get emotional. ”This is it as real as it gets. The authenticity of emotions was clearly captured in the videos, and I look toward to sharing it with everyone," he said.

Meanwhile, Charo made everybody fall in love with her love story. It was like a fairytale come true. she remembered every detail as if it has just happened. "Seeing an important part of my life immortalized through the video brought back so many memories that I share with my lifetime partner," she said. “It was unnerving at first but in the end, it was a beautiful way to pay tribute to someone who impacted my life in so many ways."

Embodying lifetime partnerships
Sun Life hopes to encourage our countrymen to find that lifetime partner who will bring out the best in them and that is through the stories shared by Piolo, Inigo, Enchong. Matteo, and Charo.

"Their stories exemplify the kind of partner Sun Life aims to be for every Filipino pursuing his financial journey," Sun Life Chief Marketing Officer Mylene Lopa said. ”We are committed to helping them make life brighter."

All the said ambassadors are long-time Sun Life clients. "This brings truthfulness to their testimonies of having found a lifetime partnera 'kaakbay’ in Sun Life in their financial journey. We’re thankful that they supported our vision and permitted us to share their stories to Filipinos," she said.

Providing lifetime financial security

Sunlife introduces Kaakbay as its latest effort in renewing its promise to become the Filipinos' lifetime financial partner and its goal of providing its clients with lifetime financial security, which it has consistently done since it introduced life insurance in the Philippines in 1895

”Providing our clients with lifetime financial security is the core of our mission. In fact, Sun Life pioneered life insurance in the Philippines 124 years ago so that Filipinos can enjoy its benefits. This advocacy is complemented by our products and services, which we have diversified through the years to serve even their health and wealth needs,” Lopa said. ”And we will not stop there. As our clients’ lifetime partner, Sun Life will continue to innovate and improve so we may serve our clients better.”

Phenom and Team Gilas Women’s Crowned Red Bull Reign Philippine Champions

Friday, July 5, 2019

June 29, 2019 (MANILA, Philippines) – Two Philippine Champions emerged victorious at the Red Bull Reign Finals on Saturday, June 29th, 2019, at Kerry Sports Manila in Bonifacio Global City: Men’s Champions Phenom and Women’s Champions Team Gilas Women’s. Both teams advance to the Red Bull Reign Global Finals in Toronto, Canada, this August where they will represent the Philippines against 15 other nations from around the globe.
Red Bull Reign is a high-endurance, offense-driven 3-on-3 street basketball tournament that brings the best ballers in the world together. Each game is contested under strict rules inspired by FIBA’s (International Basketball Federation) 3-on-3 rules:
  • Teams consist of 3 players (+1 reserve) age 18 and above
  • Games take place back-to-back on opposite halves of the court
  • The first team to score 21 points or the most points in 10 minutes wins the match
In total, fourteen male teams and eight female teams competed this year.

Women’s Red Bull Reign Tournament

Red Bull Reign 2019 introduced a standalone tournament exclusively dedicated to women. Teams from countries including Russia, United Kingdom, and the Canada held local tournaments to find representatives for the Global Finals.
This year’s instalment saw several local teams all vying for a spot in the Finals. The opening games took place in the morning and progressed over the course of the day, until only two teams remained: Zamboanga Valientes and Team Gilas Women’s, with the later taking the victory with a final score of 21 – 06.
Team Gilas Women’s is comprised of Jack Daniel Animam, Claire Castro, Janine Pontejos and Afril Bernardino. They are members of the Philippines’ national women’s basketball team, with years of experience under their belt.
We train everyday”, says power forward Animam. “We’ve known each other for so long that our teamwork is top notch. And now, it’s a privilege to represent the Philippines in the World Finals in Toronto!”
Men’s Red Bull Reign Tournament

This year’s men’s tournament began with the Last Chance Qualifier, which saw eight teams from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao compete head-to-head in back-to-back action. Teams Phenom and Philippine Navy, and team J Hoop from Cebu City, crushed the competition to advance to the Semi-Finals together with Team Basilian.
Teams Phenom and Basilan both won their respective games to meet in a thrilling finals showdown. With amazing shooting and tenacity, the Phenom edged its competition to a final score of 22-to-19. As three-time Red Bull Reign Philippine Champions, the Phenom this year consisted of former NCAA and PBA D-League players Shaq Alanes, Junjie Hallare, and Micole Sorela.
I’m kinda speechless”, says Sorela. “We didn’t expect to win this, especially against our friends from Team Basilan. So we feel great! We wouldn’t have made it here without the help of our coaches or my awesome teammates.”
Toronto, here we come!” shares Phenom team captain, Bong Pineda, in a statement that echoed Animam’s sentiments. “We’re excited to advance to the World Finals. We’re coming, Toronto!”
Reign 2019

Vince Hizon, Tournament Director of Red Bull Reign, shares his thoughts on this year’s tournament. “The fact that this is a qualifier for a world tournament – that makes it a big deal. Red Bull has done an exceptional job in all the sports they’ve participated in, really uplifting sports through these amazing opportunities. But in basketball, they know how passionate the Filipinos are regarding the game.”
As the 2019 Red Bull Reign Philippine Champions, Phenom and Team Gilas will represent the country at the Global Finals in Toronto, Canada, this coming August!

Student-made innovations on sustainability stand out at Manila Maker Faire

A team from STI College Global City shows their version of a go bag called the We Survive Bag

Student-designed solutions on renewable energy and disaster preparedness took the spotlight at the third Manila Maker Faire at the Mind Museum, which gathered over 150 engineers, tech enthusiasts, students, educators, and artists from all over the country.

These innovations included a portable wind turbine made of recycled materials and a flood water filtration machine that converts flood water into clean water. These were showcased at the Manila Maker Faire’s largest booth, where 12 groups of senior high school students from STI campuses nationwide presented their work.

Dubbed as the “greatest show (and tell on earth),” Maker Faire is a festival for all ages that celebrates innovations in the technical field and in the realms of crafts and performing arts. It was launched in 2006 and has already produced shows around the world Bay Area, New York, Paris, Tokyo, Seoul, and Berlin, among others.

“Designing a relevant curriculum is only one step among many towards equipping young Filipinos with the expertise to succeed in their chosen field. It is just as important, however, to provide our students with opportunities to showcase their talents and creativity outside the classroom such as this huge event,” said STI AVP for Academic Research Aisa Q. Hipolito. “This is what the STI education is about: helping our students succeed in professions they were trained for, and we are exhausting every opportunity we can provide to meet this goal.”

Fostering innovations and creativity

Motivated by the pressing issues on the increasing energy consumption versus limited natural resources, young makers from STI created groundbreaking projects aimed at addressing this widespread phenomenon.

The portable wind turbine made out of recycled materials was designed to serve as an alternative source of electricity for household devices. As advocates of sustainable technology, students also exhibited a grass cuter and a canal waste collector that run entirely on solar energy.

“Growing up, we've seen how our lives depend on nature's finite non-renewable energy sources—which also leave a negative impact on our environment. With this, we thought of exploring more sustainable alternatives that are also earth friendly like solar-powered equipment and portable wind turbine as a source of electricity,” shared Rose Ann Tubal, Grade 12 STEM student from STI College San Fernando.

STI students also showcased disaster-preparedness and response inventions. One of which is a flood detecting alarm that produces a powerful sound to alert the community on the rising flood levels.

Meanwhile, to provide one of life’s basic necessity in times of calamity, a flood water filtration machine was built with six types of filters to convert flood water into clean water. An improved version of a go bag called the WeSurvive Bag, which includes portable water filter and solar-power charger and flashlight, was made of waterproof and tear resistant fabric.

Among the other STI products include concrete cylinders made of recycled sugarcane fibers, banana stem fiber-made kraft paper as an eco-friendly alternative to plastic packaging, and a mosquito repellent aromatherapeutic candles, to name a few.

The upcycled crafts and creative innovations displayed at the fair were initially exhibited in the annual Senior High School Expo, a nationwide exhibit for STI students to demonstrate their ideas and creativity.

The two-day exhibit also bridged STI students to industry professionals and co-makers, paving the way to gain insights that would help them improve their products and meet people that could lead them to greater opportunities.
