DITO Telecommunity, the emerging force in the local telco landscape, has again surpassed industry giants by clinching the Rated #1 Mobile Network spot in the Philippines at the Ookla® Speedtest Awards 2023.
Ookla, the global leader in network intelligence and connectivity insights for almost two decades and pioneer of the world-renowned Speedtest® and Downdetector® platforms, announced that DITO achieved a rating of 3.6 in based on comprehensive data collected from July 1 to July 31, 2023.
DITO Chief Executive Officer and President Eric Alberto and Chief Revenue Officer-Consumer (CRO) Evelyn Jimenez received the award from Ookla Chief Executive Officer Stephen Bye at the Ookla Booth during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain on February 27, 2024.
“After conducting an in-depth analysis of consumer-initiated tests taken with Speedtest, DITO has been named the Top Rated Mobile Network in the Philippines by Ooklaʼs Speedtest Awards,” said Stephen Bye, President and CEO of Ookla, a division of Ziff Davis. “This award is given to mobile network operators that demonstrate exceptional ratings in comparison to other major mobile networks in the market for Q3-Q4 2023. We are thrilled to acknowledge DITO for this achievement, which is the result of their unwavering focus on delivering a superior network experience to their customers," said Stephen Bye, President and CEO of Ookla, a division of Ziff Davis.
The Top Rated Award, bestowed upon top providers, is determined by users who complete tests on Speedtest.net or via the Speedtest applications on Android and iOS devices. Consumers are prompted to “Rate Your Provider” on a scale of one to five stars. Each survey response associated with the test results is subjected to the same data quality filtering and sample construction applied to the Speedtest Fastest Awards to ensure the data is accurate and reflects consumer behavior.
This latest accolade underscores DITO's relentless dedication to enhancing customer satisfaction and delivering seamless connectivity solutions. As the fastest-growing telco company in the country, DITO's pursuit of excellence has been recognized by its wins in the 2023 OPEN SIGNAL report for providing the best Games Experience, Upload Speed, Availability, and Consistency during the Q2-Q3 mobile network experience.
DITO's Chief Revenue Officer-Consumer, Evelyn Jimenez, emphasized, "We’re beyond proud and happy that more Filipinos are choosing DITO. Beyond the accolade, we see this as a manifestation that we have earned the trust of Filipino subscribers. This recognition serves as yet another testament to our steadfast commitment to enriching the lives of Filipinos through exceptional services and pioneering digital innovations. As we endeavor to transform the Philippine telecommunications landscape, we pledge to provide unparalleled services, ensuring our customers enjoy a superior mobile experience nationwide.”
I Want To Share Foundation (IWTS), a transformative institution that has been helping thousands of pediatric patients from PGH (Philippine General Hospital), recently held its "CAn Beat It" Graduation Ceremony, a heartfelt celebration of resilience, courage, and triumph over the childrens’ battle over cancer. Held at the Manila Prince Hotel, one of the foundation’s supporters, the annual event marks the third installment of honoring young cancer survivors who have completed their chemotherapy treatments.
Every year, hundreds of children in the Philippines face the challenges of cancer treatment. Despite the obstacles, their unwavering determination and fighting spirit shine through. Like a usual graduation, the milestone ceremony is a testament to the recovering patients’ bravery and serves as a beacon of hope for those currently battling cancer.
This 2024, the ceremony welcomed additional 150 child graduates who have survived acute lymphoblastic leukemia, brain tumors, lymphoma, osteosarcoma, retinoblastoma and other cancer diagnoses. Each graduate was garbed in traditional graduation attire and were awarded with certificates which symbolized their incredible achievement.
"CAn Beat It" not only celebrates the individual victories of pediatric cancer survivors but also embodies the collective hope for a future where children can enjoy the simple joys of life without the burden of illness and a renewed future filled with endless possibilities.
"Through it all, you, our esteemed graduates, have remained steadfast in your determination to overcome. Your journey is a testament to the power of the human spirit,” said Sheila Romero, Founder and Chairwoman of IWTS. During the momentous occasion, Romero also honored the patients’ families who have served as pillars of strength, love, and unwavering support.
She further added, “We are thrilled to celebrate the remarkable journey of these young cancer warriors. As they embark on the next chapter of their lives, it is important to remember to maintain a healthy lifestyle and be consistent in their follow-up appointments,”
Romero is a survivor herself, her bout with cancer has been pivotal in her devotion to the cause. She reminded the graduates and their families that, “ You still have to be observed for the next 10 years. A lot of patients get better but do not return anymore that is why when relapse happens, it is already difficult to cure. The PGH is there to help as well as the upcoming Helpline that will be established by IWTS so that you can fight cancer as well as provide support in the continuing journey of the cancer patients.”
Last year, the IWTS held a charity gala and was able to raise P19M for the establishment of the Childhood Cancer Helpline, aimed to increase the country’s cancer survival rate from 30% to at least 60% through a navigation system which can help in early childhood cancer detection and intervention. In the said gala, the IWTS also sought financial assistance for the construction of two specialized rooms at the Bone Marrow Transplant Center in PGH as well as support for the state-owned hospital’s Pediatrics Hematology Oncology.
The Childhood Cancer Helpline is aimed to support the Philippines’ initiative to mitigate delayed detection, partial diagnosis and treatment discontinuation. For the past few years, the country has made significant progress as a result of the tireless efforts from health advocates both within the public and private sectors. Public awareness on childhood cancer has led to mobilization programs as well as reduction of late diagnosis from 70% to 30%, and decrease in treatment abandonment rate from 80% to 10% . In 2019, the passage of the National Integrated Cancer Control Act (NICCA) and the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Act has driven efforts to provide quality care and reduce the burden on affected populations.
Other notable projects of IWTS include the construction of a 10-bedroom pedia ward in PGH which pediatric patients use before their surgery as well as the renovation of another extension at the Pediatric Cancer Wing.
Her Excellency Constance See Sin Yuan, Ambassador of Singapore, was the keynote speaker during the event. IWTS endeavors to enlist more donors in the future, which includes generous hearts from Singapore.

Women are crucial to the Philippines’ agriculture, fisheries, and forestry (AFF) sectors. The United Nations highlights that women have the highly specialized knowledge of forests from species diversity, management of resources, to conservation and restoration practices that are vital to sustainable development and food security. The Philippines demonstrates its appreciation for women in these sectors with the Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment Plan (GEWE Plan) 2019-2025 to expand economic opportunities for them.
But gender disparities persist. The Philippine Commission on Women reports that women in the AFF sectors face marginalization in employment, pay, and resource access, constituting only about 25% of workers and often receiving lower wages. Women's significant contributions to AFF are also generally overlooked as their work is typically considered household tasks.
This International Women’s Day (IWD) 2024, Indonesia-based environmental organization that focuses on awareness raising and policy advocacy, The Institute for Studies, Advocacy, and Education (LivE) shares insights on how local organizations can overcome the gender disparities by empowering women to take the helm in sustainability and conservation.
Driving Change with Indonesia's Pioneering Women-Led Conservation Movement
Finding the balance between environmental protection and economic empowerment often met with a dead end, or in most cases, a sacrifice from the one on the other side. This is often made worse by policies that did not consider grassroots aspirations, such as what happens in Indonesia’s Kerinci Seblat National Park, in the western part of Sumatra island.
Public apathy toward conservation of the park led to the depletion of 130,322 hectares in 2014. This impacted the decrease of biodiversity, the water sources, the support systems for many agricultural fields that the surrounding communities depend on. As a result, there was a disproportionate impact on farmers, especially women farmers as they faced not only water scarcity, soil fertility, and crop yields but also the cascading effect on it.
Recognizing the importance of forest conservation and the untapped potential of women in nearby communities, LivE initiated training sessions addressing women's rights in forest management. These sessions tackled challenges encompassing health, domestic responsibilities, production roles, and social engagement, linking them to environmental strains. This is where Rita Wati, a 52-year-old native of Kerinci Seblat National Park and now chairperson of "Women's Group for Environmental Care Maju Bersama," emerged as a driving force behind the park's conservation efforts.
In the early days of her advocacy, Wati faced skepticism for being a woman in role that is often assumed by men and challenges in evolving conservation regulations. She persevered in initiating discussions with the national park authorities which enabled her organisation to submit a proposal that allowed them to be involved in managing, conserving and benefiting from the national park—leading Wati to ink a historic conservation partnership agreement with the national park, marking Maju Bersama group as the pioneering women's group managing a forest area in Indonesia.
"It's truly a joy. Inspired by our progress, now, women in many villages are no longer silent. They are ready to move together to fight for women's rights to the environment and forests," said Rita.
Advocating nature protection and women empowerment
The success story of Maju Bersama group, now comprising 25 members, in securing their rights to participate in forest conservation has sparked a wave of positive outcomes. Beyond empowering their own businesses, they've honed their capacities, influenced policies, and actively engaged in pivotal decision-making processes.
Rita's impactful journey includes participating in national events like The Asia Foundation's 'The Role of Women in Social Forestry for Food Resilience' in 2019 and contributing to the establishment of the Indonesia Social Forestry Manager Association. Recognized by local authorities, Rita leads the park in gender-equitable conservation, aligning with UNESCO's World Heritage Site standards. Her unwavering determination and successful collaboration between the Maju Bersama group and Kerinci Seblat National Park inspire women to advocate for environmental rights, bannering women empowerment in environmental preservation.
