Ortigas Avenue, Quezon City—June 9, 2020—If there is one trait that Filipinos are known for, then that is our ability to stay positive regardless of the circumstances. Whether it be braving a typhoon or taking long, stressful hours of travel due to traffic congestion, we can always find a reason to smile and ways to get by with any challenge.

Amid the current global health crisis, however, it may, arguably, seem way harder for some to remain optimistic, especially as it presents new challenges that bring massive changes in the way we live.

This pandemic has been overwhelming hospitals, restricting access to public spaces, disrupting industries, bringing mental health challenges, and forcing people to stay indoors—all these lead to what they refer to as the “new normal.”

With these new challenges and amid uncertainties, how can we still choose to have a positive mindset?

Adapting to the Changes
For Matteo Guidicelli, an actor, model, member of the armed forces, businessman, and triathlete, maintaining a positive attitude is crucial to adapt quickly to the current situation.

“Sometimes, it may seem depressing, especially now that everything is different. Our lifestyle, somehow, changed and, even our livelihood is affected. Some even lost their jobs,” said Guidicelli on “Santé Engage,” a podcast with Joey Marcelo, CEO of Santé and Paul Caluag, Santé’s chief network development officer.

Marcelo could not agree more. He said that we need to think of ways to become resilient. “Santé is blessed that we remain resilient. The Santé Family still thrives amid the adversity as we can still supply to our business owners and reach out to people who need our health and wellness products.”

Creating Routine and Staying Healthy
Staying healthy and strong is also crucial. Guidicelli shared that creating and maintaining a routine can help in doing the activities they need to do every day.

“Just because we are staying at home, it does not mean we do not have anything to do. There are so many more chores, work, and more piling up. By maintaining a routine, it will be easier to go about all these activities," said Guidicelli.

"I have set up a mini-gym, where I do some biking every morning when I wake up. In the afternoon, I run and cook for my wife. I just try to make everything routine-based and alive,” he added.

Guidecelli also noted that there are ways to stay fit despite not having the proper workout equipment at home. There are resources or videos online where anyone can learn some simple workouts.

Marcelo, on the other hand, also aims to stay fit and healthy as he works out almost every day. He also joins Sante Fit Fam every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to work out with the entire Santé Family.

Coping with the “New Normal”
Coping up with the new normal should also be part of everyone’s priority. For instance, Caluag said that Santé is preparing new measures to ensure physical distancing practices in their working environments. They also coined a better term for it as they refer to it as “better normal.”

"We must maximize opportunities to come up with better ways to operate and beat the challenges that we will face while helping our business partners to work better and thrive. That is why we are bringing our training, seminars, and conferences online,” said Caluag.

As for Guidicelli, he considers using his influence to help those in need. Recently, he, together with some organizations, initiated an online benefit show called “One Voice PH,” which raised more than PHP10 Million and helped distribute goods to places where it is needed the most.

“When people ask, ‘how am I going to help when I can’t go outside?’ I remind them that our doctors and front liners have been begging for us to stay at home, as much as possible, to help stop the spread of the virus,” he said.

Be a Channel of Blessings
Another way of helping to ease the situation is to spread positivity by sharing your blessings. “I believe that during a crisis like this, the resources of the world is for everybody. So, it is the time for everyone to share what they can to support the community,” Marcelo said.

Santé also creates programs to give back. Marcelo also encourages all Santé business owners and partners to find ways to support their communities and become a channel of blessings to others.

The company also aims to continue inspiring people to live more and do more, just like Matteo Guidicelli, through its premier organic health and wellness products and services.

●       Booking platform will feature a Sanitized Stays badge to showcase properties that meet standards for safety, hygiene, and protective equipment
●       Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) applies to check-in & check-out, housekeeping and room service

Manila, 1 June 2020: OYO Hotels & Homes is rolling out its Sanitized Stays in the Philippines from 1 June 2020. Under the initiative, OYO will implement comprehensive hygiene protocols and step up vigilance measures pre and post-check-in and throughout its customer journey, to curb any potential spread of Covid-19.

○        Check-in & check-out: To ensure social distancing, OYO will revamp its guest check-in & check-out process to a minimal touch process. The hotel chain is in the process of acquiring the required approvals for guests to upload their IDs and complete their formalities at the hotel with minimal staff interaction. Similarly, check-out and payment processes are being restructured to ensure minimal staff interaction.
○        Minimal contact service: To ensure social distancing at all customer-facing touchpoints, OYO will introduce minimal contact room service and will train the housekeeping staff on the same
○        Sanitized Stays Tag: All OYO properties enrolled in the platform will have the Sanitized Stays logo displayed on the Oyo App and Hotel Booking Platforms. Prior to being awarded this tag, hotels will go through an initial check, followed by checks are regular intervals for compliance. Out of these, properties that have cleared the background check will display the Sanitized Stays tag on the booking page. An audit based on reviews from guests will be conducted on the properties regularly to ensure that feedback, reviews and recommendations are taken into consideration to ensure they continue to be accredited as Sanitized Stays.

●       Training of on-ground teams: The new training module will incorporate SOPs on the changed operating procedures across functions like:
○        Health screening including temperature checks and symptoms for guests as well as employees. Guests, Vendors and Contractors will be required to complete travel and health declaration.
○        Proper disinfection of the space frequently with the placement of hand sanitisers at the reception and the increased need to wear safety gear at all times
○        Encourage in-room dining and avoid all public areas
○        Distance markers on floors to highlight the correct physical distance people must adhere to
○        Guests will be requested to handle their own luggage as far as possible (unless the guest is a senior citizen or has a physical impediment). All luggage will also be sanitised.
○        Policies for dealing with outside suppliers and contractors complying with health advisories and government regulations
Property management to oversee the property’s housekeeping practices

“In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the hospitality industry is facing a new normal in the way we operate. As a brand committed to offering safe accommodation options, OYO is proactively leading the change in housekeeping and cleanliness protocols within the hospitality industry, across all OYO properties. In this industry, maintaining the trust and confidence of guests is key - and this is reflected in the guest-first approach OYO is taking through our new protocols, in order to provide reassurance and peace of mind to guests,” said Ankit Gupta, Country Head, Philippines, OYO Hotels & Homes.

Hotel proprietors and staff can exercise discretion to accept or decline guests who exhibit signs and symptoms associated with Covid-19 such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, runny nose, headache and sore throat.

The Department of Health's Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC) will be contacted if guests and staff show signs any staff members show such signs and symptoms of having the virus.

Reminder to guests and staff
To ensure that social distancing is continuously observed, reminder signs will be placed in locations with higher foot traffic such as the hotel reception and lobby, in lifts and lift lobbies, and in restaurants. There will also be reminders on proper handwashing techniques in all toilets. To encourage frequent hand-cleaning, hand sanitisers with at least 60% alcohol content will be placed in common areas such as the reception and lobby, for all guests and staff to use. All staff will also be reminded to maintain appropriate hand hygiene standards by frequently cleaning their hands with soap and water or hand sanitiser.

Thorough cleaning protocols
As a vigilance measure, public spaces will be cleaned frequently using disinfectant products that have been pre-approved by the Ministry of Health for cleaning activities. Extra focus will be given to frequently touched areas such as tables in the lobby, the reception desks, lift buttons, door handles, room key cards, water dispensers and so on. Hard surfaces will be cleaned with warm water and detergent, followed by the disinfectant solution.

All items for laundry will be thoroughly washed at the hottest appropriate setting and fully dried, while all equipment used to transport and handle laundry will be thoroughly cleaned and sterilised.

It remains unclear when the world will find a cure against the coronavirus, but what appears to be clear these days is the new-found respect for frontline Overseas Filipino workers who are bravely helping other countries fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

This Migrant Workers’ Day, it’s not enough to honor Overseas Filipino healthcare workers by calling them noble frontliners. They are modern-day heroes. Take the case of Jessica Lamela, a Filipino caregiver who is currently in Israel. Other than being a caregiver, she is also looking for ways to help other Filipinos who lost their jobs due to the global health crisis.

“Because I am a nurse by profession, I am called to serve during this pandemic. But I am also helping other Filipinos in times of need. Daming workers na nawalan ng work. Ayaw na kasi ng employer nila na may magdadala ng virus. I help them because member ako ng Filipino organization, called NAFILCO, by giving them support and food in times like this,” Lamela said.

According to the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO), the number of Overseas Filipinos who worked abroad was estimated at 10.2 million. But on May 6, the COVID-19 National Task Force informed the Filipino public that close to 70,000 OFs are to be brought home due to the global economic effects of the pandemic. These heroes are hurting, to say the least.

“Since 2009 po, wala akong uwian, nung una for two years. Dati po akong construction worker and now sa factory naman ako nagta-trabaho. At dahil po sa COVID-19, wala na kami ng overtime. Kaya nagbebenta-benta na rin po ako ng ulam dito,” said Dennis Pascual Maala, an OF in South Korea.

For his part, Cesar Cosep, who is working as a Project Manager of a railway system in Jeddah, was fortunate enough to keep his job, but other OFs in Jeddahwere not as lucky as him.

“May mga tao sa Jeddah na nagka-cut sa salary nila. Nag-stop yung project nila because of the lockdown. Their company was forced to shut down,” Cosep said. But the Filipino community in other countries remain solid and strong for their families back home. They continue to work for them, while contributing to the country’s slowing economy by keeping remittances coming.

Remittance Cushion

Although economists expect the country’s remittances will suffer due to the pandemic, OFs like Lamela, Maala, and Cosep still continue to send money from abroad through the remittance tie-ups of BPI with online remittance services.

“Kahit anong oras po at gusto kong magpadala sa mommy ko or sa mga kapatid ko or sa tita ko, through mobile banking, nakakapagpadala ako. May BPI Representative na pumunta sa Korea to introduce the ‘Pamana Padala’ offering, oramismo natatanggap,”explained Maala.

Cosep agrees. “I’ve been using online remittance because I don’t have the time to fall in line and go to the physical branch. This is to be safe also. I send money to my family for their necessity. Ang important is they have food, medicine, and face masks this time,” he said.

Valuable contribution

BPI continues to initiate opportunities to drive digital services for the benefit of OFs and their families back home. This is also the Bank’s way to show recognition for their valuable contributions to the country.

“Even in the face of this global pandemic, and even when our OFs are far from home, they can still take a hands-on approach to providing for their families in the Philippines. They can still manage their accounts online and take full control of their finances, despite the threat of an economic downturn,” said Aileen Lamasuta, head of BPI Retail Segments.

“But as we recognize the fact that there may be challenges in remittances due to COVID-19, BPI is still committed to strengthen our offerings for our brave OFs. We have a strong network of remittance partners worldwide and a remittance solution, BPI Pamana Padala, to give OFs peace of mind while away from their loved ones. These will allow them to sustain the support they are sending their families back home,” explained Reggie Cariaso, Head of BPI Corporate Banking Strategy, Products, and Support.

Lamela, the caregiver, attests to this. “BPI played a big help for us at this time, because very safe and secure ang transaction and alam kong makakarating sa family ko ‘yung remittance. Big help ang digital services nila.”

Through digital banking, BPI continues to provide easy access to relevant financial services for the modern-day heroes—the OFs who remain selfless even in the face of a global pandemic. And every year, on June 7, the Philippines marks "Migrants Workers' Day" to celebrate the signing of Republic Act 8042 or the Migrant Workers Act of 1995.

While he doesn’t regard himself as a hero, Cosep has an apt description of one. “A hero is a person who does something out of his way and does brave things. But during these trying times, sila yung mga taong they go out of their houses for the people in need, I consider them as heroes. You don’t have to kill to become a hero. Gone were the days when we define heroes as someone who dies for the country,” he said.

“Sila ‘yung may takot sa Diyos. Iniisip ‘yung makabubuti para sa nakararami,” Maala added.

In a recent webinar organized by insurance company Allianz PNB Life, Reach52 founder and Chief Executive Officer Edward Booty revealed that demand for digital and telehealth services are expected to increase as the world continues to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

During this period of community quarantine, the global insurer has been sponsoring talks about the impact of COVID-19 on life and business in a bid to help Filipinos become more informed in adjusting to the new normal. Booty, who has worked for the UK National Health Service (NHS) and one of the world’s largest consulting organizations prior to launching his award-winning social enterprise in 2016, was the guest speaker on the webinar, “Insights and Learnings: COVID-19 Impact on Healthcare System.”

During his talk, Booty emphasized the importance of digital systems and telehealth services in addressing the non-COVID health problems that would arise from the pandemic.

Global demand for telehealth is expected to increase due to COVID-19,” he said.

In the US, the telehealth market is projected to grow by 80 percent. In the Philippines, the Department of Health (DOH) has already started boosting telehealth services in the National Capital Region (NCR) and is expected to expand this to other regions soon.

Even before the pandemic, Allianz has been offering 24/7 telehealth consultation as part of its Allianz Well! insurance product. With an annual plan limit of up to PhP100 million, it gives plan holders access to an accredited healthcare network.

The market is slow now, but inevitably a number of core trends and needs will come out of this global crisis,” Booty added.

Trends and Opportunities

These trends include “digital health and remote care, with forced innovation adoption, and community-owned solutions.”

Data analytics and preparedness, which includes improving outcomes and patient-centric care, and focusing on prevention, is likewise expected.

Booty expounded that the demand in healthcare services is “patchy, and for many other diseases the use of health services actually decreases.”

He said that there are already 13.5 million people in the world who have missed their vaccines, with 21 countries experiencing vaccine shortage. For every death caused by COVID-19, he added, there will be 180 deaths from other diseases if vaccines are restricted.

In the UK, he cited, about 200,000 weekly screenings and test referral for cancer have been put on hold.

On the other hand, the number of visits to ambulatory care practices has declined by 60 percent, with surgical and procedural specialties and pediatrics experiencing the most significant decline. Patient volume has likewise decreased.

Global health, universal health coverage, increased equity, system strengthening, and continued low health worker numbers, as well as the need for sales, revenue generation, frugal solutions, and business model innovation are likewise expected.

Booty, however, pointed out that there is still a lack of solutions focusing on a comprehensive digital way. Time is also running out for the need for scale and accelerated progress towards universal healthcare.

On the one hand, demand for personal protective equipment is also projected to increase. For 2020 alone, 2.2 billion surgical masks, 1.1 billion gloves, 13 million goggles, and 8.8 million face shields are needed worldwide.

The global ventilators market is likewise projected to grow to $12.1 billion in 2020.

Impacts on income are just as worrying, especially in poor countries, as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) pulled $83 billion from emerging markets, with the World Bank (WB) also projecting that there would be 20% less remittances this year.

Looking forward, Booty said that it is important to “pivot now.”

Plan for the longer term, and take sensible precautions, but also appreciate that the economy has to function,” he concluded.

The Covid-19 quarantine regulations and social distancing has put a lot of pressure and stress on numerous child-caring organizations about the food and basic supplies they require to operate. Amidst this pandemic, the Grundfos Foundation responded to the needs of eight SOS Children’s Villages around the Philippines by donating food, cleaning supplies, and personal protective equipment that will last these orphaned children and childcare frontline workers for a month.

SOS Children’s’ Villages is home to 957 children and 145 childcare frontline workers, who are located across Muntinlupa City, Metro Manila; Calbayog City, Samar; Cebu City, Cebu; Davao City, Davao del Sur; Lipa City, Batangas; Tacloban City, Leyte; Zarraga, Iloilo and Mariveles, Bataan. Commenting on the grant, Kim Nøhr Skibsted, Executive Director, Grundfos Foundation, said “The Covid-19 pandemic is taking a toll on the most vulnerable communities. With our grant, we hope to ease the pressure that SOS Children’s Villages are facing and support the children and childcare workers for at least a month. The Foundation will be working closely with the Grundfos Philippines team and SOS Children’s Villages to distribute these supplies in a timely manner.” Jonathan Breton, General Manager of Grundfos Philippines along with a few employees and representatives from the respective SOS Children’s Village were involved in the distribution of these provisions and equipment, all while ensuring social distancing guidelines. Commenting on the visiting to the SOS Children’s Village in Manila, Jonathan Brenton said, “It is a proud moment for us at Grundfos Philippines, knowing that our Foundation cares about the welfare of our local communities. It is also heartening, to see that our support will help the more than thousand children and their caretakers through these tough times.”

“Because of the Covid-19 lockdown, we have been struggling to get food and supplies for our children and childcare staff. This donation from Grundfos Foundation is a welcome relief from the shortages we are experiencing and will help us adjust to the new normal,” says, Ma. Angeles Guanzon-Lapeña,
President, SOS Children’s Villages. The Grundfos Foundation is also funding various initiatives across the world to fight the spread of Covid- 19 and help local communities on ground during this pandemic.
